SUBLETT Outdoor Writer If you don’t know how to use your tackle well, it’s a sure bet you don’t catch many fish. It’s surprising how many people play at fishing without giving their tackle any serious thought. More of ten than not, they go home disgus ted with the fishing hole when the real cause of their failure is their improper handling of the tackle. With this in mind, 1 11 try to ex plain in this and later columns the right way to rig and use some of the more effec tive baits. The spinner bait is a good place to start, be cause it will be the top bait from now until the weather gets hot. The spinner bait consists of one or more blades suspended on a wire over a lead head, a plastic skirt and a large single hook. The possibilities of different combinations of blades, heads and skirts are almost limit less. The purpose of the spinning blades is to create vibrations and flashes of light in the water to at tract a hungry basS. Once he gets close enough to see the minnow like body of the bait, hopefully he will want to inhale the thing right down to your rod tip. Right now, while the bass are still deep, it can be fished right along the bottom with the blades barely turning over. Later in the spring when the bass are in shallow water, it can be buzzed along the surface in just a few inches of water. Another advantage of the spinner bait is that it is almost impossible to hang up. The upturned hook rides over snags, allowing the bait to be cast into the middle of brush- piles where the big ones live. Casting a spinner bait onto the bank and pulling it off into the water can be an effective trick that’s not possible with many other baits. Spinner baits are good to fish over weed beds, because they can run shallow | enough to be above the weeds. The Ags won going away, losing only one set. Top Ag Bill Wright did not play, owing to school work. Bill Hoover took over the No. 1 spot for the day and had little diffi culty disposing of Mark Smith 6-0, 6-3. Mark Silberman, disposed of Tommy Stott easily, winning 6-2, 6-0. Charles Emley found going a little tough in the first set with Mike Long but got untracked in time to take a 6-4 win. Tom Courson defeated Stuart Morrison 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth match followed by John Kirwan’s 6- 1, 6-2 win over Larry York in the fifth. Don Farmer, playing sixth, waxed Mike Ellisor 6-2, 6-3. Hoover and Emley teamed in the top doubles match to down a feisty Sam team of Smith and Stott, 6-4, 7- 6. Silberman and Kirwan in the No. 2 match lost the only set of the day for the Ags but stormed back to take a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win. Freshmen Mark Parker and Edwin Teran ousted Morrison and York 6-1, 6-3, to complete the sweep. Buying the right spinner baits can be a problem, because there is such a big selection. My personal favorites are the chartreuse with sil ver or chartreuse blades, the black and chartreuse with silver blades, and black with silver blades. Things to look for in spinner baits are ball bearing swivels for the spinners, well finished bodies, full skirts and strong, sharp hooks. A spinner bait has to take a lot of abuse so it doesn’t pay to buy cheap, poor ly made baits. Just about any kind of rod and reel will do to throw a spinner bait. I prefer a fairly stiff rod and a bait casting reel with heavy line for spin ner bait fishing. A lighter rig is all right for open water but it takes stout tackle to haul hogs out of the brush. San Antonio for a Saturday match. Trinity is ranked No. 8 nationally and the Ags are 16th. Pan American is not ranked but has been very tough in competition thus far this season. Rice game not on TV in Rudder Since Saturday afternoon’s Aggie-Rice basketball game will be on regional television, A&M athle tic department officials have de cided not to close-circuit TV the game into the Rudder Tower au ditorium. They felt it would not be approp riate since fans can see the game on home TV anyway. The tipoff is set for 2 p.m. The doors to G. Rollie White Coliseum will open at 12:30 p.m. Once the general admission-student area is filled, the doors will be closed to all except reserve seat ticket holders. Texas A&M’s 60-year team will be introduced at halftime Saturday.
