TV review Page 4 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 1975 Toma’ role resurrected by new ‘Baretta’ series By RODNEY HAMMACK Batt TV Beviewer Just when it seems that police and detective shows have reached their saturation point on television, the second season rolls around with four more on its schedule. Three of them are on ABC and one on CBS. ABC’s offerings include a new Quinn Martin production called “Carribe,” a spin-off of “The Rookies ’ called S.W.A.T. and “Baretta,” which made its debut Jan. 17. “Baretta” started out as a resur rection of last season’s “Toma.” The earlier show folded when Tony Musante didn’t return for a second season. When ABC found itself in need of replacements for its falter ing fall series, Musante was offered the “Toma” role again, which he turned down again. The role of the quick-change de tective then went to Robert Blake, a television newcomer, and the show was restructured and renamed “Baretta.” Blake started his acting career in the old “Our Gang” com edies, but he is best remembered for his portrayal of a murderer in the movie “In Cold Blood. ” The premiere episode was called “Where the Sun Never Shines, which was appropriate since most of the action took place either at night or in badly lighted rooms. And there was plenty of action. Everything flashed by in a kind of a gray blur so that by the end of the show about the only thing that was clear was that most of the police department hated Baretta’s guts. The opening show dealt with Baretta s quest for revenge against the people responsible for his girlfriend’s murder. On this point the show was limited by the time element which prevented the vie wer from really getting to know the woman. She might as well have been a perfect stranger when she was gunned down, Sam Pechinpah style, in slow motion. Violence pretty well dominated the show beginning with Baretta having it out with another cop who screwed up his bust followed mi nutes later by the street ambush re sulting in his girlfriend’s death. In addition to fairly common shootouts and beatings, there was a scene where Baretta practically drowned a thug in a grimy toilet to get information from him. The scene was almost identical to one in “The Laughing Policeman” with Bruce Dern doing the honors. “Toma fans may feel a little out of place watching “Baretta” since the only remaining similarity is the dis guises. The first episode had Blake breeze through six disguises — a wino, golfer, waiter, barber, dere lict, and cowboy (from Lubbock). The rest of the time he moved around with slouchy clothes and cap and an unlit cigarette dangling from his mouth. Future episodes will surely fill in the gaps in Baretta’s character, but the first week made it clear that his boss (Dana Elcar) probably wants to get rid of Baretta as much as the crooks. The producer assures us, however, that the inspector would never fire the unorthodox cop be cause “he is the man who gets more convictions from his arrests than anyone else in the department.” Air purification method for space craft sought One major problem for the American manned space program is the problem of purification of air in space and undersea craft. Professor Daniel L. Flamm of the Chemical Engineering Department is head of a project working in con junction with NASA-Ames Re search Qenter at Moffett Field, California to solve this problem. The devices being developed will destroy'organic pollutants in space and undersea transportation sys tems with an electrical discharge. “The life support system of a spacecraft or submarine must main tain the concentrations of trace con taminants well below hazardous Research at A&M, in the non polluting control of insects by hor mones and pheromones received a boost with a $195,300 grant from the National Science Foundation. The project, headed by Dr. Her bert A. Roller, has now received funds totaling almost three-quarter million dollars. “The central strategy for this new approach to pest control is the de railment of normal development by substances which imitate the insect’s own juvenile hormone,” Dr. Roller said. He said that “By applying the naturally-occurring hormones to in sects during vulnerable periods in their life cycle, normal develop ment can be disrupted so that death or sterility results.” “Pests will not become resistant to these substances, since they are essential regulators required for important life processes in the in sect,” Roller said. “Also, they are specific to the target pest and with out direct side effects on other life and appear completely non-toxic.” Dr. Roller has received interna tional attention for his work with isolating and synthesising of juvenile hormones in insects. Through previous research. Dr. Roller and other TAMU scientists have been credited with the isola tion, elaboration and chemical synthesis of the juvenile hormone, I levels,” Dr. Flamm explained. “These pollutants include species ranging from simple metabolic pro ducts such as alcohols and esters to aromatics and inorganic materials such as freons which are desorbed from equipment and lubricants,” he went on. “Water is present simply because you perspire and carbon dioxide is present because you breath. “Present devices have severe problems because they become ex hausted with use, are inefficient and are usually for specific compounds,” Flamm pointed out. “The systems also tend to be complicated and heavy and some may generate one of the two hormones in insects which regulate developmental pro cesses. Roller said the NSF grant is in tended to support basic research to learn more about insect hormones and, in turn, about hormones in general. poisonous by-products.” “The electrical discharge is an al ternative device which has not pre viously been considered,” he said. “In this process air or oxygen would be recirculated through an electric discharge and, possibly, an absor- bant for purification. The electric discharge would oxidize the conta minants into a few simple products such as water, carbon dioxide, car bon monoxide and hydrochloric acid which can be easily removed or recycled. The electrical discharge system has a number of potential advan tages. It would not be exhausted or poisoned in use and a constant re moval efficiency could be sustained. It may be capable of treating dif ficult materials such as freons. It would be light-weight, occupy a small volume and, conceivably, would also compete in terms of low heat generation and power con sumption. This method may also be useful in the removal of certain pollutants from stack gas. Preliminary findings indicate essentially total elimination of a contaminant can be accomp lished during a single pass. It has reduced contaminants by 1,000 times, and there were no detectable organic by-products.
