The bureau receives 50 to 75 complaints monthly, said LeRoy Balmain, executive director of the local bureau. The local bureau, downtown in the Varisco building, began opera tions here four years ago. It is now celebrating BBB week. Texas A&M University Town Hail Series presents The Earl Scruggs Revue Friday, November 15, 1974 8:00 pm G. Some students are not good housekeepers, so it’s not al ways the apartment complex that’s wrong. ” The local bureau has 400 mem bers of a possible 900 businesses in the Brazos Valley . It receives over 1,000 calls a month from persons requesting information about and filing complaints against businesses, Balmain said. The bureau has on file the per formance and reliability records of 90 per cent of the businesses in Brazos Valley. If a business has re peatedly sold defective merchan dise, not fulfilled guarantees or con tracts, or advertised unavailable items, it’s on file, Balmain said. The business’ record of satisfying con sumer complaints is also filed, he said. Also filed is general information—type of business, ownership, merchandise sold, etc. Balmain said the information is gathered from standard business questionnaires issued to all busines ses, “shopper” reports, bureau in vestigations and from consumer complaints. The information is av ailable to any person upon request, Balmain said. By watching advertisements in local newspapers, an anonymous BBB volunteer "shopper" goes to stores having sales, making sure the sales are consistent with the adver tisement. If not, the “shopper files a report of the misleading adver tisements and the bureau sends the report to the business. If the adver tisements can’t be justified, it is re corded in the bureau’s file, Balmain said. If a consumer desires to issue a complaint against a business, the complaint must be in writing and signed, Balmain said. The bureau sends the complaint to the business. If it makes no attempt to resolve the dispute or justify its actions, the BBB will arbitrate with the firm. This year the bureau has con ducted four arbitration cases—one concerning the sale of a faulty air conditioner, a dry cleaning dispute and two auto repair problems. Bal main said the bureau will be con ducting its fifth next week, but de clined to elaborate. s * at i f ^ Seminar to host expert on safety An engineering seminar will host Edward S.
