The U.S. and Argentina have ag reed to the joint use of the research vessel “Islas Orcadas” which will permit completion of the Antarctic oceanographic surveys begun in 1963 and the start of a five-year biological oceanography program in the Southern Ocean. The cruise, scheduled to begin Nov. 20 and last through Dec. 30, has been postponed at least two weeks. Scientists involved will be from search solar radiation in the cruise area. Biological primary productiv ity in the ocean depends, in part, on the radiation environment. This is tied to other researchers work by the Scripps scientists and inves tigators from the Argentine Antarc tic Institute. He will employ devices to deter mine the amount of standing vege tation in any particular part of the ocean. S. carrying oil and gas to land and industrial and carrying municipal waste out to sea. The tremendous forces produced by the ocean cause up to a 25 per cent failure in these pipes whose pollution can endanger the beaches, marine life and health of the resi dents. Dr John Herbich, head of ocean engineering at Texas A&M, is lead ing a research project tackling the problem of protecting these pipelines. In the labs he and his assistants reproduce the waves and the winds and the slope of the beach in long tanks to duplicate ocean conditions. “These forces from the waves have been known to move pipe, ten feet in diameter and weighing 80 tons, as much as 150 feet away from its original position,” Herbich said. “A serious problem is the effect of wave-induced pressures and forces on the sediments around pipelines,” Herbich said. “Waves can produce submarine landslides that have actually damaged two offshore production platforms.” He went on to say the prime fac tors affecting the design of underwa ter pipelines are environmental considerations and construction methods. The team is helping de velop a comprehensive bibliog raphy on the design and specifica tions aspects of underwater pipelines.
