Hann, Jr. and Dr. ack Anderson are checking the sub-lethal effects of three common wastes now being discharged into the Gulf. Anderson is studying 25,000 commercial shrimp to determine the effects of the wastes on their rate of growth in different concentra tions of the three types of wastes. The reason we check the growth rate is that everything has to be functioning correctly for growth to occur normally,” Anderson said. If the growth rate is affected further study will be conducted to deter mine why. According to Hann, the study will determine whether the safe levels published in the government’s Ocean Dumping Regulations are reasonable. The study is also intended to aid in developing recommendations for permissible concentrations of chem icals currently being dumped into the Gulf. SIFIED *at and asher - fenced exas 46-3420 7650.
