THE BATTALION Page 3 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6, 1974 Government blamed for energy shortage By T. C. GALLUCCI Staff Writer Who is Senator Henry Jack- son? Who is Senator Abe Ribicoff? Michel T. Halbouty, prominent petroleum expert and geologist, says that they are merely politi cians who know only how to spend appropriations; other p e o p 1 e’s money. He is referring to the re cent Jackson hearings when nu merous petroleum experts an swered “harrassing and intimidat ing questions.” Halbouty, a TAMU graduate, spoke to a small, hut appreciative, audience last night in the Rudder Theatre. Sponsored by the Great Issues Committee, he titled his speech, “Crisis by Consent.” He says that the title explains the entire reason for the present en ergy shortage—for ten to fifteen years Washington has known that such a crisis was coming and con sented to its arrival. “The blame belongs squarely on the shoulders of the politicians. There and no where else,” said Halbouty. Halbouty says “if Washington will stop harrassing and berating the oil and gas industries, that they could solve the shortage quickly and effectively.” Accord ing to Halbouty, “This nation has the energy needed right here in this country. We have the re sources, it is simply a matter of production. Through research and technology, we can do it.” He stressed the need for domes tic development of resources and No charges filed in death College Station police report no charges will be filed in the death of Kurten resident Larry Sanders. Girl gymnasts lose one meet Approximately 100 women from Texas competed in the Texas Women’s University Gymnastics meet in Denton. The women participated in un even parallel bars, balance beam, vaulting and floor exercising in cluding both compulsory and op tional routines. Jane Matthews of A&M took first in uneven parallel bars, Karen Bonds third in uneven parallel bars, Reenie Smith fifth in floor exercise and Lisa Keeline fifth in vaulting and third in bal ance beam. This is the first meet that the girls have lost teamwise. They swept the other two tournaments which they attended — Pan Am and Tarleton State. Kite-flying tree An unidentified tree won a kite flying contest in Austin’s Zilker Park, Saturday. Contestants were composed mostly of students, but also included were a candidate for county judge, and a university Zoologist. The tree was given the award after inadvertently capturing two kites. The category? “Best Kite Flown By a Tree.” less dependence on unreliable for eign sources. Bringing back independent wildcatters was one of Halbouty’s solution to the crisis. “The minds and courage of the independent man is what we need. Oil is found by drilling holes in the ground, not by looking at squig gly lines on a chart in a fancy office.” His second solution is for the oil and gas industry to go on a 30-day strike and not produce a single drop of oil. Hal bouty cited a recent poll By TED BORISKIE Boz Scaggs should have been a hit. With all his musical prowess aside, he should have been success ful on the basis of his name alone. Scaggs started his career in San Francisco with misplaced Texan Steve Miller. After the first few Steve Miller Band al bums, Scaggs had quite a cult fol lowing built up. When he left the group, he was a hypemaster’s dream for a perfect success story. The massive predicted success never came as he went through several albums changing styles, even playing with Miller again. His newest album, “Slow Dan cer,” finds him with a lot of horns and singing rhythm and blues. Johnny Bristol produces the al bum and writes most of the songs, continuing his long association with Scaggs. This Boz Scaggs is much dif ferent from the rock ‘n’ roller of years past that was seen in the film “Filmore.” On “Slow Dancer” he puts across a jazzy type of rhythm and blues that makes better use of his voice than did any of the mediums he had previously used. He is backed up throughout most of the album by a soulful backing chorus and some great boozy horns. He sounds like quite a differ ent performer on “Slow Dancer” and with his rhythm and blues and jazz stylings he reminds me of nobody so much as Van Morrison. where 72 per cent of the people questioned did not believe that there was an energy crisis. “Through political propaganda, the public has been convinced that industry has formed a conspiracy and is hiding all the energy, only to have themselves go broke. Such a strike would awaken an apa thetic public and make them real ize the gravity of this shortage,” said Halbouty. “Should we have such a strike ? The answer of course is no,” he said. “But by God I’d like to try it.” With the choral group pushing him along, he wails and sings his heart out, making the music quite believable, as if he might plan to stay with this style for a few al bums more. “You Make It So Hard,” which leads off side one, is one of the best tunes I have ever heard from Scaggs. He sings it at times sounding like Ray Charles, at oth er times reminiscent of Sam Cooke. The title tune slows things down a bit, as one might suppose from its name. Scaggs handles the slower and more difficult number as well as he has any of the up tempo or rock songs. He manages to create a moody, mys tic image, sounding in simply fan tastic voice. Scaggs does a bang-up job on Allen Toussaint’s “Hercules” and also handles Bristol’s “I Got Your Number” and his own “Take It For Granted” with a marvelous inimitable style. “Slow Dancer” is at once the most listenable and most complex of all of Scaggs works and I en joy it tremendously. I find noth ing in Scaggs’ earlier material to compare with it. Will it make him more success ful ? Probably not.
