Latest evidence points to “Montezuma’s Revenge” or “tur- istas” (a disease which afflicts travelers) being caused by an altered reaction to one’s own in testinal bacteria. The symptoms of nausea and diarrhea are appar ently not related to anything in food or water but are merely the body considering the normal in testinal bacteria as invaders. Stool cultures taken during the acute phase of the illness usually reveal no abnormalities. Q. Are stimulant pills like “No- Doz” or “Vivarin” dangerous? A. Generally speaking, no. Most of these drugs contain caffeine as the active ingredient and are not harmful if used with discretion Doctor’s Door and according to directions. Q. What is a yeast infection and how do you get one? A. A yeast infection is caused by a fungus, the most common of which is “Candida albicans” or “monilia.” It usually involves skin or mucous membranes, oral or vaginal. It is transmitted by di rect or indirect contact. Q. What causes “flashbacks?” A. Flashbacks are relivings of a psychedelic experience long after the original drug dosage has worn off. They can occur at any time, for months or years after the initial “trip.” As far as I can determine, “flashbacks” are apparently an inherent effect of certain halluci nogenic drugs, such as LSD in particular. They are probably comparable to “side reactions” of other drugs. Men Talk More, Women Smoother Page 3 Mania Sprouts Danger GALVESTON (A 1 )—Texas teen agers are courting death by munching poisonous species of mushrooms in search of hallucino genic highs, an expert on poison said today. Michael Ellis, director of the University of Texas Poison Con trol Center here, said the mush room mania came to light in the past several months with the hos pitalization of six youths from Hitchcock and Dickinson. “Three of them came in on the same night,” Ellis said. “They all recovered but they were mighty sick.” Ellis said the three reported buying mushrooms from a seller “from the Alvin-Angleton area.” Ellis said the most recent case is a 19-year-old mainland youth who was admitted to a Galveston hospital Thursday night. “He said a friend of his brewed some mushroom tea,” Ellis said. “He’s in one of our psychiatric units, hallucinating badly and very sick.” Ellis said the word is out among the teen-agers that hallu cinogenic mushrooms grow in cow or horse dung and turn blue or purple if their caps or stems are bruised. Who talks more, men or wom en? Research by a graduate student indicates males are most talka tive, once they get started. Ms. Marjorie Swacker will dis cuss her findings Friday in a sociolinguistic seminar titled “Speaker Sex: A Sociolinguistic Variable.” The seminar will be from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Room 226 of the University Library. It is co-sponsored by the Rural /Sociology Research Group and English Department. Material Ms. Swacker will pre sent comes from a paper she will read at the 1973 meeting of the Linguistic Society of America. Her thesis at California State at Fresno dealt with sex specific speech. Ms. Swacker found that men use three times as many words as women to describe a given situation. She also learned that women speak slightly faster than man and tend to qualify estimates. The ladies also employ smoother shift ing patterns in their speech. Men used interjections in going from one group of objects to another on a table while describing them. “I expected to find that wom en use more adjectives,” related the doctoral student in English. “By that I mean use of colors. But there was no significant dif ference.” Ms. Swacker said speech rates were not significantly different either. Women spoke 112 words per minute; men, 107. Women also used the qualify ing words “about” or “around” in estimating the number of objects on a table. Men did not use an estimating device, though both were clearly making guesses. The differences were found in her research using people with the same economics, educational, ethnic and regional backgrounds. “The only variable,” she said “wa# sex.” “The research indicates that we should not assume speech is androgenous b e h a v i o r,” Ms- Swacker says. Her research population con tained 34 persons, evenly divided between the sexes. She taped in terviews and observations, using cassette tape cartridges that re corded an hour of conversation. “Men would talk for more than a full hour, once they warmed up and got started,” commented the native of Los Angeles, Calif. “Five minutes after the tape ran out, I would have to terminate the interview.” Ms. Swacker’s findings are sig nificant enough, according to linguistic specialist Dr. Garland Cannon, to argue that sociolin guistic research which does not consider the sex of the speaker as an independent variable might well have its validity questioned. The Friday seminar is open to all interested individuals.
