By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS National CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.—The Skylab 3 astronauts went through final preparations for their Fri day blastoff into space for a rec ord 84-day stay in America’s or biting laboratory. Astronauts Gerald P. Carr, William R. Pogue and Edward G. Gibson expressed confidence in the success of their mission. NEW YORK—Flight cutbacks and a major strike are likely to make air travel more inconvenient this Thanksgiving and Christ mas, but major airlines say they expect to get all their customers where they want to go for the holidays. Because of the energy Campus Briefs Turkey A family event that attracts regular joggers, students, towns people and visitors will take place Thanksgiving morning before Texas A&M-Texas football ac tivities. It’s the Turkey Trot, a 3.2-mile run, jog or walk conducted an nually by the Health and Physical Education Department. The fourth edition of the Trot will start at 8 a.m. next to G. Rollie White Coliseum. Turkey Trotters need only be ready to start jogging, (“It’s up to the individual,” said Dr. John Chev- rette) at 8 a.m. No entry fee is charged. Every runner completing the course will receive a Turkey Trot certificate. Floating Bottles A Texas Engineering Experi ment Station research project involving' float bottles and in formation cards is drawing to a close, and scientists on the project have found a few surprises as a result of the study. Dr. Wesley P. James, assistant professor of civil engineering and project head, said the float bottles were used in an attempt to chart shoreline Gulf of Mexico currents. “We released more than 300 bottles offshore containing in formation cards,” Dr. James noted, “in hopes that beach combers would fill out the card and return it to us. “We had a 30 per cent return on the cards, more than we had hoped for. We received one re port card from Mexico, and sev eral from the Brownsville area,” he said. Theory Course Five students are enrolled in a basic electricity and transistor theory course at the Electrical and Telephone Training Center. The one-week course is con ducted by Charles Guthrie, in structor at the center. The Texas Telephone Association and the Texas Statewide Telephone Co operative Association, in coop eration with the Engineering Extension Service, a division of TAMU, sponsors the course. Further pressure on the airline system is coming from the flight attend ants’ strike at Trans World Air lines, which has shut down the nation’s second largest carrier since Nov. 5. WASHINGTON—A measure to force President Nixon to order, gasoline rationing by Jan. 15 was defeated on a 48-40 vote in the Senate. Leading opposition to the proposal, Sen. Paul J. Fannan, R-Ariz., said that it is too early to be sure that gasoline ration ing will be necessary. Tau Beta Pi, a national honor society composed of outstanding students from all engineering fields, recently held its 68th na tional Convention at the Univer sity of Florida in Gainesville. Attending the convention were John Beard, president of the A&M chapter, Raymond Bednar, corresponding secretary and Dr. James Rand, former adviser. The convention voted to merge with Sigma Tau, a similiar orga nization and to hold the 1976b vention at A&M. “The ’76 convention will 1 lot of work,” said Beard, “tn will be worth it since it will g us the opportunity to show t A&M with its outstanding I ities and student body to repit sentatives from engineering: leges across the nation." Beard added that the nial would give added significai to the convention. WASHINGTON—The Defense Department said about half of its oil supply — previously provided by Arab sources—must now come from U.S. domestic sources. To make up the deficit of about 300,000 barrels daily from Arab sources, the Pentagon will com mandeer on an emergency basis 1 to 2 per cent of U.S. produc tion, officials said.
