THE BATTALION Wednesday, October 31, 1973 College Station, Texas Page 7 Radio Amateurs Contact! Communications Satellite Radio amateurs at TAMU made initial contact this week with OSCAR 6, a communications satellite designed and operated operated by “horns.” OSCAR (Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio) en ables amateaurs to make long distance contacts on bands not usually “open” for long distances, according to Kurt Freiberger, publicity chairman for Texas A&M’s MSC Radio Committee. “We were able to make contact with ‘hams’ in Montana, Michi gan, Massachusette and Central MEMBERS OF THE MSC RADIO COMMITTEE made contact with other radio amateurs via OSCAR 6 this week, the amateur radio satellite. OSCAR (Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio) acts as a relay station for radio signals. (Photo by Randy Crews) Italian Reds Limit Group’s Sex Life ROME UP)—The Italian Marxist-Leninist Party, a radi cal group left of the Communists, has issued strict sex di rectives that are causing frustration among cell members. A party official acknowledged that only 30 per cent of the revolutionary party members have been able to live up to the official sex guidelines. “One reason they fail,” said Angelo Arvati, 30-year-old editor of the party publication, “is because of political dif ferences between husbands and wives.” In a manual presented by Secretary-General Aldo Bran- dirali, the party made sexual harmony one of its chief dic- tums. “Only in that way,” Brandirali said, “can one be serene the day after and begin a new day of struggle for the ulti mate victory—edification of socialism.” Besides sexual harmony, the party program had warned against sexual intercourse more than once a day, claiming: “All that about virility and making love more than once in one night is a bourgeois myth and reflects the theory that women are sex objects.” Brandirali, 32 and married, links sex and politics be cause “sex without class consciousness cannot give satis faction even if it is repeated until infinity.” The party has no representation in the Italian Senate or Chamber of Deputies. However, it participates in elec tions. Its members are believed to number a few thousand but there is no exact count. Texas,” Freiberger noted. “The satellite operates as a relay sta tion, much the same as the com mercial Telstar and Intelstat communications satellites.” The Aggie amateurs, who pre fer to use their call sign in con junction with their name, made the contacts using International Morse Code. Corky Sarvis, WB5CIT, operated the transmit ter and code key, and Dave Wil liams, WB5FLB, tuned the re ceiver and relayed antenna head ings to the antenna crew. “Tracking” of the OSCAR 6 was accomplished by the antenna team headed by Ron Hollis, WA5ZEV, who held the trans mitting antenna and directed its signal path. Determination of antenna headings and orbital path prediction was accomplished by the only unlicensed member of the crew, Randy Crews. Freiberger noted that the stu dents are limited to two 10 to 20- minute contacts through OSCAR per week. The time limitation is placed on the satellite due to a narrow “window” of favorable operating levels as the craft passes overhead. Users are asked to limit their contacts to two per week to allow on-board batteries to recharge with solar energy. OSCAR is an active relay device, retransmit ting signals instead of merely “bouncing” them back to earth, as is the case with ECHO and other reflective communications satellites. The craft is available for use by any amateur with the proper antenna, transmitter and receiv er, Freiberger said. Optimum operating frequencies are 145 Megahertz for transmitting and 29.5 Megahertz for receiving. T AMU’s Radio Committee boasts 40 members this year. David Gent is chairman of the committee, which meets every other Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the MSC Student Programs Office. Freiberger said the group will establish contact with the satel lite again Friday evening, oper ating from Room 211 of Bizzell Hall, temporary location for the club’s radio equipment. OSCAR is sponsored and main tained by AmSat, Amateur Satel lite Group, through cooperation with governmental space agencies. APO Conducts Blood Drive The Aggie Blood Drive has been set Nov. 7-8 in the Memorial Student Center, student officials announced. A joint effort of the Student Government and Alpha Phi Omega, the drives conducted each semester benefit TAMU students and their families. Members of APO headed by Mike Bunch will conduct the two- day drive in cooperation with personnel of the Wadley Insti tute of Molecular Medicine in Dallas. The Campus Projects Commit tee chaired by Larry McRoberts will be responsible for establish ing distribution priorities. Mc Roberts said present priority is students and their families, TAMU faculty-staff and former students, in that order. Advance registration for the fall Aggie Blood Drive will be Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Donors may sign up for the drive at stations in the MSC, Krueger-Dunn Com mons, near Sbisa Hall and in front of the Academic Building. Bunch urged students to sign up. For the entire TAMU stu dent body to become eligible, in event of need, to draw blood from the bank, at least one student in 20 must contribute.
