Page 6 Ohio State Ousts USC Texas, Houston, SMU in Top 20 The Ohio State Buckeyes re placed Southern California Mon day as the No. 1 team in college football. Southern Cal’s defending na tional champions, who had been on top since the first week of the 1972 season, slipped all the way to fourth place behind Ohio State, Nebraska and Alabama when their 14-game winning streak, longest in the country, was broken by Saturday night’s 7-7 tie against Oklahoma. Despite the 1 «« for the season of star fullback Champ Henson with a knee injury early in the game, Ohio State ran its record to 2-0 with a 37-3 rout of Texas Christian. The Buckeyes, who vaulted from third place to No. 1, received 35 first-place votes and 1,118 points from the 61 sports writers and broadcasters who participated in this week’s Associ ated Press poll. Nebraska held onto second place with 10 first-place votes and 897 points following a late rally that produced a 20-16 victory over Wisconsin. Alabama walloped Vanderbilt 44-0 and rose from fifth to third with six first-place votes and 837 points, closely trailed by Southern Cal. State, Richmond, Tulane, Twin 200 Set for Saturday At Texas World Speedway The fastest weekend in the his tory of auto racing is set to take place at Texas World Speedway when the United States Auto Club returns to the 2-mile, high-banked oval for the USAC Twin 200’s on Saturday, Oct. 6. The twin-bill classic will feature two separate 200-mile races for both the USAC Championship (Indy) and Late Model Stock Car divisions. During qualifying for the in augural Texas Twin 200’s at the Texas World Speedway last April, Bobby Unser drove his Offy-pow- ered Olsonite-Eagle to a new of ficial world’s closed course speed record with a speed of 212.766 mph, which established the multi million dollar Texas facility as the “World’s Fastest Speedway.” Officials have indicated that the record could be increased in October if cool weather conditions prevail during qualifying trials. Many of the drivers entered in the rich doubleheader are expect ed to see double-duty by driving in both 200-mile races. The busy weekend of racing activity kicks-off on Thursday, Oct. 4 with practice and qualify ing for the Championship divi sion. Practice and qualifying for the Stock Car segment of the Twin 200’s is set for Friday. Saturday’s action gets under way with the Indy cars getting the starting signal at 1 p.m. and the Stock Cars taking the green flag at 4 p.m. Tickets are available to A&M students at the Finance Office, 2nd floor of the Memorial Student Center. Office hours are 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Durocher Resigns By The Associated Press Controversial Leo Durocher, whose career included playing with Babe Ruth and managing three World Series teams, re signed as manager of the Houston Astros Monday and Coach Pres ton Gomez was named to replace him. Durocher, whose flamboyant career spanned almost 50 years, stopped short of saying he was retiring from baseball for good. “Don’t put words in my mouth,” Durocher said when asked if he was retiring from baseball for good. “But for someone who’s been in baseball as long as I have there comes a time to rest.
