Page 10 College Station, Texas Wednesday, August 8, 1973 BATTALION Freshman Edition Sports Supplement A&M Track Improving The A&M track team surprised everyone by finishing second in last year’s Southwest Conference track meet. A series of excep tional performances propelled the Aggies to their high finish. With most of last year’s key personnel returning, it looks as if happy days are ahead for the Aggie cindermen. Coach Charlie Thomas and As sistant Coach Ted Nelson are re turning both of the team's SWC champions to defend their titles. High hurdler Scottie Jones was feeling good enough at one point last season to intimidate Olympic champion Rod Milburn in the Drake Relays but injured his leg which kept him from reaching his full potential. He sore-leggedly managed to win his event in the SWC meet and if he remains healthy this season, he could be running world class times by the summer. such standouts as Charles Daw son in the sprints, hurdlers Shif- ton Baker and Craig McPhail, vaulters Brad Blair and Wade Richardson, 440-man Wes Rich ardson and 880-man Ron Mc- Gonigle. NCAA Champion Dave Roberts of Rice missed all three Ted Nelson attempts at his first height. Both Smalley and Roberts are gone this year while Peterek will be a junior. Freshman sensation Sammy Dierschke finished second in the 100-yard dash after spending most of the season recuperating from a late winter illness. He didn’t start coming around to form until late in the season and if he too can stay healthy, big things are expected. Horace Grant finished second but was disqualified in a highly disputed call that drew protests from almost every school repre sented. A junior, Grant will be back to make up for last year’s disappointment. Other key performers are Doug Brodhead in the 440, Bill New ton in the javelin, Keith Bucy in the hurdles, Gerald D’Ambrosio in the sprints, Harold Davis in the 880, Phil McGuire in the high jump and Pat Bradley in the mile. ^ Sbisa Annex Krueger-Dunn J NOW BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE.
