Joe H. Rothe, assistant direc tor and state agent for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, was honored in the ceremonies staged in Washington, D. C. George W. Otey, Extension specialist serving in South Viet nam as part of an Agency for In ternational Development contract program with the USD A, was the other Texas recipient. The Superior Service award is the highest honor the USD A can bestow on its employees, noted Dr. John E. Hutchison, Extension director. Rothe was cited “for creative and animate leadership in mobil izing and coordinating Extension resources in initiating and im plementing educational programs in response to continuing and emergency needs of the organiza tion and its clientele.” Otey was recognized for out standing performance and serv ice to the people of South Viet nam. His citation states: “For outstanding ability to work with counterparts and farmers in South Vietnam and unusual suc cess in increasing agricultural production through demonstra tion of improved seed, cultiva tion, harvesting and marketing practices.” Rothe, former county agent and district agent serving Districts 11 and 12, presently is responsi ble for planning, coordinating and implementing agricultural programs at the state level for application by county staffs, Hutchison said. “He has achieved phenomenal success in initiating emergency programs as well as those re quiring innovative thinking through his outstanding ability to mobilize Extension resources,” Hutchison emphasized. During the VEE (Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis) out break that threatened the Texas horse industry in 1971, Rothe was instrumental in mobilizing Ex tension agents and local leaders in each county to help establish vaccination clinics and a report ing system within 72 hours. ‘‘This helped prevent the spread of the disease to other states,” Hutchi son added. Otey designed a successful small farm-size grain dryer which has greatly increased the amount of high-quality rice that Vietna mese farmers are able to market, As a result, harvest of rice dur ing the rainy season is increas ing, and better drying is helping save more of the rice production, Joe Rothe Age Group Swim Meet Set Here More than 500 swimmers from throughout the state are expected to compete in the Texas A&M University Long-Course Invita tional Saturday and Sunday. Maybe you’re one of those people who thinks of The American Red Cross only when you see a news report of a flood or hurricane on tv. And it's true—we’re there. In hours. Giving aid. And comfort. And supplying the necessities of life. All as a gift from You-the American people. But the other things we do are just as important, if not so spectacular. And they happen right in your own home town. The truth of the matter is: Red Cross is what you need it to be. Wherever you live. Whoever you are. That’s why you find us doing different things in different home towns. We teach blind kids to swim in some places. Or make sure ghetto youngsters have ice skates. Or teach baby care to deaf mothers. Or help out with drug programs. You name it. We do it. Whatever a community needs, is what Red Cross needs to do. So, in a very real sense, you are Red Cross. And Red Cross is you. And helping the Red Cross is very like helping yourself. ASK ABOUT SKAGGS SENIOR CITIZEN PRESCRIPTION PLAN AND SAVE!! WECARE MMM 1IMMB $ Wr/s&r/e 32 02.
