Feuerbach Tops Matson’s Put ^ A1 Feuerbach, 25-year-old U.S. Olympian, broke the world shot put record Saturday with a toss of 71 feet, 7 inches and averaged more than 70 feet in a series of six throws at the San Jose Invi tational track and field meet. with a toss of 70-10 on the breezy day at San Jose State’s Bud Win ter Field. He bettered the 5-year-old rec ord of 71-5% set by Texan Randy Matson, the former Olympic champion now competing as a professional. After the 71-7 distance was carefully measured and remeas ured to make certain it would be recognized as a world mark, the competition resumed. The 255-pound athlete reached 69-5%, 69-1, 69-6 and 70-7% on his last four efforts. new record-holder whose best mark before Saturday was a 70-9 a week earlier at the Mt. San Antonio Relays in Southern Cali fornia. “It’s what you call an athletics peaking-up. It could happen again next week at the Fresno Relays,” added Feuerbach, son of a Pres ton, Iowa, veterinarian. Fellow Olympian George Woods finished second to Feuerbach here with 67-0% and told him later “that’s the best I’ve seen since Matson.” Feuerbach said “Eleven years of hard work gave me to day’s throw.” District 6 Baseball Playoff The new mark came on Feuer bach’s second try, after he opened “I did nothing different today. It was just the result of an eight- week training program,” said the Officials weighed Feuerbach’s shot and determined it was about a half-ounce heavier than the required 16 pounds. He graduated from Emporia State College in Kansas in 1970, when he was a 65-foot shot put ter and moved to San Jose. His world record was made from the same ring where he has made most of his practice throws. Texas, Arkansas, Trinity and Pan American are scheduled for a district 6 playoff baseball tour nament to decide the Southwest’s representative in next month’s College World Series. Although Texas is champion of the Southwest Conference, it must play Arkansas in the tournament because the Razorbacks play as an independent and not not com pete for the SWC title because of budgetary problems. This is the first time a mem ber of the SWC has been chosen to compete as an independent against the conference champ. According to conference offi cials, the reason Arkansas doesn’t compete for the SWC title is be cause of travel expenses games played in Fayettevi, site of the Arkansas campus The Razorbacks are 422 from SMU in Dallas, the uei SWC campus, and 580 miles Texas Tech in Lubbock, the distant conference school. Ail sas is the only conference me not located in Texas. □M OMKKrsl [ ■TTAJyl f»M I _| Wl OP»MKfs« GIVE oneersi I arrAMoa 1 _] po OABBrsi I arTAM**a J □Q GIVE OltKKfM [ arrAMf>a I WE GIVE CUBE STEAK .. ^ beef ROUND STEAK ^ mfen beef boneless ft. * f 39 ROUND STEAK f >rof8n beef tenderized ft. *f 49 RUMP ROAST Swift Proten heavy beef bone in lb. * | 09 PIKES PEAK ROAST Swdt Proten heavy beef ft. * |19 FRYERS coirfims 2 breart portions St 2 let) portions I with bocks 2 wings , plus qibktr : LOIN TIP STEAK Swiff Pro ^n heavy beef ft *|69 lb. pkg. 2< OFF LABEL ^ _ COMET" “IS RAIHB0 HAMBURGER SLICED MU PICKLES ^ f'.
