Page 4 College Station, Texas Friday, May 4, 1973 THE BATTALION I Longhorns Run Past Aggies, Rice In Triangular Meet A&M’s Donny Rogers contin ued his mastery of the long jump as Texas trounced the Ag gies and Rice in a triangular track meet in Austin Thursday night. Texas garnered 108% points compared to 40% for A&M and Rice’s 19. Rice sent only a skeleton crew with none of its three national leaders: Dave Roberts in the pole vault, Ken Stadel in the discus, and Mike Cronholm in the 440-yard hurdles. The meet was held in the middle of Rice’s final exams. Rogers’ jump of 24-11% set a new meet record for the annual triangular and is just two inches away from an A&M school rec ord. The senior from Bay City started long jumping for A&M just this year, being previously used as a sprinter. “I regret I didn’t start sooner,” he said. “If I had had any idea I would be this good, I would have been jumping all along.” A surprise winner, though no real surprise to anyone following the Aggie track team, was Sam my Dierschke in the 100. Dier- schke ran a 9.46, one of the best times in the conference. After a w'eak start, Dierschke caught up with the leaders in 70 yards and the rest of the race was all his. “I’m always strongest the last 50 yards,” he said. “I’m going to have to work on my starts.” It was the first time this year Dierschke had run the 100 and so remains undefeated in the event. Also winning for the Aggies was David Peterek in the pole vault. He matched his season’s best of 15-6, having cleared the height twice before. “It feels good to win again,” he said. “I’m beginning to come back now and I hope I’ll be go ing higher at the conference meet.” Freshmen Pace SWC Stats; Ags’ Falcon Leads Pitchers A&M pitching star Bobby Fal con led the Southwest Confer ence in strikeouts averaging 14.7 whiffs per nine innings. Falcon, a transfer from Panola Junior College, posted a 9-5 record for the Aggies with a 2.19 ERA. Third baseman Keith Moreland of Texas became the first fresh man to claim an SWC batting championship by hitting .405 to nose out Houston right fielder David Vinson, who finished at .397. Fellow freshman Richard Wortham of the Longhorns post ed a 4-0 record to pace the pitch ers. Moreland, the third Longhorn to win the batting crown in the last four years, can extend his thanks in part at least to Baylor in general and pitcher Jim Den- neny in particular. The Carroll ton Turner infielder came out of a slump early in the season with an 8-for-13 showing against the Bears and led the batting race from then on. Attention Graduating Seniors and anyone else that will not be at TAMU next fall, if yon wish to have the 1973 Aggieland mailed to you, please come by the Student Publica tions office, 216 Services Bldg, and leave a mailing address and a postage fee. Then last Saturday, Rice catch er Len Shelby went into his final game against Baylor with a .408 mark. But Denneny held the senior from Houston hitless in three trips and Shelby dropped to fourth in the final rankings at .385. Moreland, meanwhile, was being checked by Houston pitch ers, getting only one hit in 12 at-bats in the three-game series. Moreland dominated offensive statistics, leading in runs (17), hits (30), total bases (48), runs batted in (19) and tying team mate Rick Burley in homers (4). Texas Tech’s Cecil Norris was the slugging (total bases in number of times at bat) champ at .732 to Moreland’s .649. Norris was also third in batting, hitting .390 in conference play. The Church..For a Fuller Life..For You You wonder how it got there ... a sapling far from the forest. And grew . . . alone, untended, little-noticed. And flourished to stand like a sentinel against the horizon. Maybe a tree understands, as sometimes man does not, the secret of God. We are never alone! What we need He has provided. What we are to be come He has designed. The beauty and majesty and grace that can emanate from one object, one creature, He has envisioned and made real ... for all to share. There is no loner. But when we feel alone, then, more than ever, we are drawn to God and His Church. In faith, in friendship with others who believe, in service to those who need our affection and care—we discover how deeply and satisfy- ingly we belong.
