Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman began testifying before the Watergate grand jury Thursday. Their law yer said they are confident of acquittal if indicted. Both men resigned from the White House staff Monday after news accounts and other sources linked them to an alleged cover- up of the Watergate wiretapping. Ehrlichman has been tied to two other scandals as well, an al leged burglary in the Pentagon papers case and a Lebanese bank deal promoted by accused mutual fund looter Robert L. Vesco. Haldeman, who had been Nix on’s chief of staff, and Ehrlich man, his chief domestic adviser, spent the morning talking with chief prosecutor Earl Silbert. They began giving testimony in the afternoon. Ehrlichman went first. Their lawyer, John J. Wil son, said neither would claim any protection against self-incrimina- tion. Wilson was asked by newsmen if his clients fear they will be indicted. Industrial Goods 9 Prices Increase WASHINGTON bP) — Whole sale prices of industrial goods rose sharply last month, but some farm and food prices declined for the first time in six months, the Labor Department said Thurs day. Meat prices dropped 2.9 per cent in April, presumably reflect ing the nationwide consumer meat boycott and the price ceilings imposed by President Nixon late in March. But prices of industrial com modities including raw materials and finished manufactured goods, jumped 1.4 per cent in April, the steepest monthly hike since the early Korean War Year of 1951. The industrial prices are con sidered a better barometer of in flation than volatile food prices. The over-all Wholesale Price Index rose eight-tenths of one per cent, following a record 2.2 per cent increase in March. The rate of advance was considered sharp, though not as steep as in previous months. President Nixon’s chief eco nomics adviser, Herbert Stein, attributed the rise in industrial commodities to “the strength of the worldwide boom” and the recent devaluation of the dollar. Stein said the imposition of tighter controls on price increases of major corporations announced Wednesday by Nixon, “should al so slow down price increases and in some cases may bring about price reductions.” As for wholesale prices of farm products, he predicted they would continue to fluctuate in the com ing months but was confident they had reached their peak. “I don’t know about that,” he said. “But they have no fear of being convicted.” Ehrlichman testified for nearly four hours. Then Haldeman, who had been waiting outside during that time, entered the grand jury room. Ehrlichman said he answered questions “very fully.” When asked whether he had invoked the Fifth Amendment, he said, “Oh my no. Gracious no. I wouldn’t take the Fifth Amendment under any circumstances.” Faculty-Staff Members Receive $12,000 In Awards, Watches The Association of Former Stu dents presented $1,000 awards and commemorative watches to 12 A&M faculty-staff members at the annual Faculty Recogni- H’x60' 1971 mobile home on private lot. Richardson, named by the President to be attorney gen eral, is about to select a special prosecutor to take over the case. Richardson said only, “I have the whole question under delibera tion.” Meanwhile former presidential adviser Charles Colson was ac cused by government auditors of handling, and probably editing, a phony advertisement placed by the Nixon campaign in the New York Times last May 17. The ad, which criticized the newspaper’s opposition to Nixon’s mining of Haiphong harbor, pur ported to be the product of 14 citizens whose names appeared on it. But the Federal Elections Of fice said the 14 had nothing to do with it. It told the Justice De partment the ad was originated, produced and paid for by the Nixon campaign, an apparent vio lation of the campaign law. Commission To Study Women’s Lib VATICAN CITY <A>> _ Pope Paul VI named a special commis sion Thursday to study, among other things, whether women should be accepted as priests in the Roman Catholic Church. Com mission members range from an American college sophomore to an Italian bishop. The Pope’s instructions direct the commission to investigate means of “liberating” women both in the Church and in society at large. The commission comprises 26 members, 15 of them women, in cluding its youngest member, Deborah Schellman, 19, of At lanta, Ga., a sophomore at Mary- mount College in Arlington, Va. It is headed by Bishop Enrico Bertoletti of Lucca, Italy. A Vatican statement said the commission was instructed to study what makes women “happy or unhappy, their aspirations and their frustrations.” rds to de • these rings will c starting March through May 4, returned to the BUSIER - JONES AGENCY the Registrar’s Office for delivery on or be- — nK m. to 12:00 noon, Mon- HOME MORTGAGES INSURANCE FARM & HOME SAVINGS ASSOCIATION Home Office: Nevada, Mo. 3523 Texas Ave. (in Ridgecrest) 846-3708 clerk is on XEROX COPIES 5c EACH OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Monday thru Friday 9 a. m. - 10 p. m.
