Page 6 College Station, Texas Wednesday, April 4, 1973 THE BATTALION Shift Pedal Is A Challenge For Female Bus Driver By M. I. WARWICK The guys expected her to be a seven-foot, 300-pound moose. But Debbie Killgore can’t even quite reach the shift pedal, so she sits halfway up on the driv er’s seat. She uses a back prop for comfort, but said her back was killing her. This particular bus isn’t her favorite one any way. “I heard this was a hard job to get,” recounted the 19-year- old shuttle bus driver, “but ap parently they wanted a female. My roommate’s boyfriend tried, but they said they didn’t need anybody. Then I tried and they gave it to me.” A&M’s first woman bus driver began her job about three weeks ago, and in spite of the awkward ness of driving the tank-like ma chine, this petite brunette ap pears quite competent behind the wheel. “I like to drive. When I saw these buses I thought, ‘Man! That’d be fun!’ I guess I got the Showdown Set On Marijuana AUSTIN (A*)—The House Crim inal Jurisprudence Committee, which was expected to meet Tues day night, probably will meet Thursday, April 12, for a show down on marijuana bills. A friend said this was just like Debbie, to do something differ ent. The S-foot-l 1 /^ horticulture ma jor does not look the part she plays. Her hair is cut in a long shag and her eyes protected by sunglasses. However, she claims she knows more than the average girl about cars. That helps when her Toyota breaks down. Debbie is emphatic when de nying an affiliation with Wom en’s Lib. Some commented at first, ‘Oh, Women’s Lib, huh?’ But that had nothing to do with it. I’m not a libber at all.” Debbie said she gets a lot of stares. “I’ve been called the ‘sex iest bus driver’ and the ‘best looking bus driver’ but that’s be cause I’m the only female,” she added modestly. She screetched the door open at a stop by the old biology building, and strug gling to restrain the pup, mur mured, “I shouldn’t have brought him.” She expressed a genuine de light in her 7-11 a.m. workday, and smiles a lot during the rounds. The student chauffer says she is not an extrovert. She cast a friendly wave to a small blond boy playing near Plantation Oaks Apartments, and a happy nod to a passing driver. “Last week in the morning it started out just kind of ugly. But then the sky got really black and it just started pouring. I like this job because it’s fun watching the elements change like that.” The small but able bus mistress knows that any office job is not for her. Her major field will allow her to work in the open too. “It can get boring going around in circles for four hours, but sometimes I have people come and talk to me, my friends, and of course I meet people, some people I don’t want to meet.” At times Debbie admits to feel ing unfeminine about driving a clumsy bus, but being indepen dently minded, she reassures her self. “It’s just a job. I don’t care what people think.” It seemed that the muscles of a man would be needed to steer the lumbering bus back onto Highway 30. “Uh, uh. I won’t get any mus cles. But I’ve noticed my arms aren’t so flabby now.” A silver bracelet shifted on a small arm. The bus she normally drives, because of its catering to the small and less strong driver, is temporarily out of service. She scooted uncomfortably in the seat with a rigid spine remembering, “It’s such a nice bus.” Tech Drops Women Dorm Restrictions Lecture Cancelled The Physics Department has announced cancellation of the Physics Colloquium presentation scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday. The speaker was to have been Dr. Jon Weisheit, staff scientist at Lawrence Livemore Labora tory in Livermore, Calif. LUBBOCK UP) — Texas Tech University President Grover E. Murray has announced that set hours that women must return to residence hall rooms on cam pus will be discontinued. Dr. Murray pointed out that recent court interpretations of federal law and subsequent ad visory opinion by lawyers require that hour requirements for wom en be dropped because they are judged discriminatory. Prior to the new ruling, junior and senior women students had self-determined hours as did soph omore women if over 21 years old. Sophomore women under 21 had to have their parents’ con sent to have self-determined hours. No freshman women have had self-determined hours but con formed to rules and regulations adopted by the residence halls themselves. Come by and test drive MAZDA a rotary engine.
