And, of course, Porter in the 100-yard dash. “It was great winning espe cially when you can beat the Pouncy’s,” Porter said after the race. “It’s been a while since I’ve been able to compete as well as I did. My legs are coming around now and I feel great. When things weren’t going well I knew they couldn’t get better without competing. You can’t just give up.” The meet could have been much closer than the 6 Vi-point spread between A&M and Baylor had the Bears not dropped the baton on the 440-yard relay and been disqualified. The Aggies’ team of D’Ambrosio, Brodhead, Dierschke and Ordat finished sec ond to SMU in a time of 41.4. SMU had a 41.2. Only two new meet records were set with Baylor’s Danny Brabham long jumping 26-9 V4 and SMU shot putter Sammy Walker getting off a 61-10% throw. Brabham upped the rec ord he set last year with 24-8%. Walker topped Rice’s Ken Sta- del’s toss of 57-3%. In all it was a good day for long jumpers traveling with the fierce wind as four individuals cleared 25 feet. Coach Emory Bellard and his staff face a general rebuilding job as only 19 of last year’s 38 lettermen return. A major overhaul job must be done on the offensive line where starters return only at split end and one tackle. Other returning starters on offense are at quar terback and the two halfbacks. Only four positions on defense have returning starters—one end, one tackle, a linebacker and a safety. The Aggies, in general, are young and inexperienced. But, while experience in quantity is lacking, the Aggies admittedly have some quality athletes around which to build a team. He’s doing a great job for us though.” Scottie Jones, hoping to better his 13.9 time in the 120-yard high hurdles, got a bad start and was upset by South Carolina’s Billy Novo by four-hundredths of a second. Jones had a 14.16. A&M’s big point producing events was the 100 and the 880 where 19 and 18 points were scored respectively. High-point man in the meet was SMU’s Gene Pouncy who scored 18% points winning the 220-yard dash, finishing third in the 100 and running the anchor leg on the winning 440-yard re lay team. In that 220, Dierschke finished only six-hundredths of a second behind the winner while taking third. Gene’s twin brother Joe was second only one-hundredth off the pace. Brought To You By Your Student Government THE BATTALION Tuesday, March 27, 1973 College Station, Texas Page 5 ,. . _ JSHhMI Kent Ellis, Evangelist “THE CHIEF OF SINNERS” If you were asked to describe the very worst type of sinner, what sort of person would come to your mind ? I think most would conceive of an irreligious, immoral individual, without principles or conscience. I would certainly agree that such a person would be a great sinner, indeed. But the man who describes himself in the Bible as the chief of sinners was not that kind of man at all. The Apostle Paul wrote “that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief” (I Tim. 1:15). He had reference to his career prior to believing and obeying Christ. At the time Paul said he was chief of sinners, he was (1) a conscientious man. He had a good and pure conscience, doing what he thought was right (Acts 23:1; II Tim. 1:3; Acts 26.9). In most respects, he was (2) a moral man. He said that “touch ing the righteousness which is in the law,” he was “found blame less” (Phil. 3:6). This would include the moral precepts of the ten commandments and the remainder of the Mosaic law. His statement must be modified by the part he played in the persecu tion and death of Christians. But, even in this, he undoubtedly thought he was doing God’s service (John 16:2). Above all, he was (3) a devout and zealous religious man (Acts 26:5; Gal. 1:14), More, he was a successful, ever, his religious zeal was ness, but “for the traditions” of his fathers. Why should a conscientious, moral, religious man be called chief of sinners ? The sins Paul lists in the context of I Timothy 1:15 are “religious” sins—blasphemy, persecution, injury to the church, and unbelief. Such sins bring one more directly into opposition to Christ, His will, and His people than any other type of sin. The more zealous and successful a religious leader is who follows the traditions of men, rather than the word of God, the more effective he is against the cause of Christ and the souls of men. Religious error is not a matter of indifference nor a harm less thing. Being religious is not equal to being righteous. The New Testament is full of examples of people who were religious, but lost. The aim of true evangelism is not to get the irreligious to be religious. It is to convince all, both religious and irreligious, to believe and to do exactly what God requires of them. Paul remained guilty of the chief of sins until he did. As a believing, pentitent individual, he was commanded to “arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord,, (Acts 22:16). No person should take comfort in his spiritual state— even if he is conscientious, moral, and religious—until he has done likewise.
