Page 8 College Station, Texas Wednesday, February 7, 1973 THE BATTAU ack Stars Smith, Milburn Join Astrodome Fiel American track stars John Smith and Rod Milburn have just been announced as entries in the fifth annual Astrodome Federa tion National Indoor Track Cham pionship. The meet, which is sponsored by the Houston Post, will be held this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Smith, world's record holder in the 440-yard dash, was top ranked in the world in the quarter mile in 1971 and won his specialty in the 1972 NCAA Championship for the second straight year. Smith's best time for 1972, 44.3 in the 400 meters, was third best in the world for the year, bettered only by U. S. athletes Wayne Collett and Fred Newhouse, the Astrodome record-holder. In tthe 1971 AAU champion ships, Smith set the world’s 440- yard dash record in winning the quartermile. He also won the NCAA and Pan American games in '71 for a sweep of all top races for the year. Milburn, the world’s greatest high hurdler, established the world’s indoor record of 13.4 in the high hurdles at last year’s meet and will be trying to better that mark against his Olympic teammate and co-world record holder Willie Davenport. Milburn, ranked as the world’s No. 1 track and field athlete for 1971 and in the top 10 again for '72 has lost only one major race in two years of competition, cli maxed by his record victory in the 1972 Olympic Games. He holds all high hurdles records for 120 yards and 110 meters. In Davenport, Milburn meets the great veteran of active track and field athletes. Olympic cham pion in Mexico City, Davenport had to settle for fourth place in Munich and wants to show he’s number one again. Another meet highlight will be the confrontation between shot- putter George Woods and A1 Feuerbach. They will meet head- to-head going for Randy Matson’s world record toss of 71-5 Vfe. trials with a 70-114 effort but was edged for the gold medal by a scant one half inch by Poland’s Waldyslaw Komar in Munich. 714, but he slipped to Munich tossing GS-ll’i Top ranked in the world for 1972, the 300 pound Woods broke the 70 foot mark three times hit ting 70-1% twice.
