In the intensely sloppily played contest, A&M was outrebounded, outhustled, outplayed but not out- scored as another overflow crowd of 7,614 watched. “I guess you could say we play ed just good enough to win,” coach Shelby Metcalf said after the game. “I’m real happy to win the game but I’m not at all pleased with our performance. We’ve got a lot of work to do.” Metcalf, who now stands 12-7 against Texas, had nothing but praise for the Longhorns. “They played fiercely,” he said. The next two weight classes were forfeited by Rice giving Wayne Lynch (134) and Jerome Urbanoski (142) an easy win. Bob Stewart (150) won by a 7-5 decision and Frank Wietz (158) was defeated by a surpris ing pin in the last period. Steve Lentsch (167) regained the mo mentum as he defeated his op ponent 4-0. However Ray Shep herd (177) lost his match 3-2 on riding points. Again Rice for feited at 191 weight class giving John Manning his win. Jim Rike (wt.) finished the action for the Aggies as he pinned his man in the first 50 seconds of the first period. The Aggie wrestlers will con tinue their season action as they take on North Texas State and Drake of Iowa this weekend at Denton. That’s the most physical I’ve ever seen a Texas team. They had something they wanted to prove tonight after losing those two other games. They had great de termination and sorely missed (Larry) Ribinson for scoring.” For the Aggies it was another balanced scoring attack with four of the five starters hitting double figures. Randy Knowles led the way with 16 points, followed by Jeff Overhouse with 14. Overhouse’s output placed him as only the seventh Aggie ever to score over 1,000 points in his career. He now has 1,011. Mario Brown, with his ultra quick movements, hit for 14 points, mostly time-precisioned layups. Mike Floyd had 13. Leading the way for the Long horns was 6-8 Mark Wilson who hit for 15 points as he powered his way through the middle of A&M’s defense. Eric Groscurth hit for 13 points before fouling out late in the contest. He led the team in rebounds with eight as Texas outrebounded the Aggies 46-37. Leading Aggie rebounding was Overhouse with 10. Both Metcalf and coach Leon Black looked for the right com bination of complimenting play ers, using nine each. Seven scored for A&M while eight hit for the Longhorns. “It was a hard-fought battle with Texas applying the pres sure,” Metcalf said. “All our play ers had to make contributions for the victory. Texas is a lot bigger than most people think, and they can wear you down.” A&M took its early five-point lead, 13-8, with 16:30 left in the first half, then steadily fell be hind until Texas had picked up a six-point lead, 32-26, with 3:09 left. The first half ended 36-32 with Texas leading. After five minutes of sloppy play, A&M began to work and with 14.22 remaining, A&M took a slim one-point lead, 42-41. For the next two minutes the lead see-sawed but with 11:59 left, A&M made its move. With 3:13 left, A&M had built up a 10-point lead, 65-55, and the game was out of reach for the persistent Longhorns. In all, the game was tied six times with A&M having the lead four times and Texas seven. The Aggies will travel to Hous ton Saturday afternoon to take on the Rice Owls in a TV game beginning at 12:30. ROBERT TRAVEL HALSELL SERVICE MM AIRLINE SCHEDULE INFORMATION FARES AND TICKETS DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL CALL 822-3737 1016 Texas Avemie — Bryan Foreman Wanted It Stopped; Didn’t Want To Hurt Frazier BUSIER - JONES AGENCY HOME MORTGAGES INSURANCE [FARM & HOME SAVINGS ASSOCIATION Home Office: Nevada, Mo. 3523 Texas Ave. (in Ridgecrest) 846-3708 KINGSTON, Jamaica </P> —“I didn’t want to hurt him any more, I kept begging Yancey Durham to stop it,” the new world heavy weight champion, George Fore man, kept repeating Monday night in the chaos of his dressing room at Kingston’s National Stadium. The towering, 217-pound for mer Golden Gloves champion from Hayward, Calif., had just stunned the boxing world by flooring Joe Frazier six times and stopping him at 1:35 of the second round. “I just kept throwing punches— I had to do my job,” Foreman said, in a voice so low that he could hardly be heard above the din. “But I could see Joe was hurt and I hoped I wouldn’t have to hit him any more. He has been a great champion and I respect him very much. “After the first knockdown in the second round, I looked over at Yancey, Frazier’s manager in the corner, and with my eyes begged him to stop it. He didn’t do it.” Meanwhile, the beaten Frazier expressed surprise at Foreman’s strength. “I knew George Foreman was big and strong, but I didn’t real ize he was that strong,” Frazier said. “I started to fight back when I should have bobbed and weaved,” Frazier said. “I was anxious to get at him. I should have laid back and let my head clear.” Frazier sat on a bench in his dressing room, blood oozing down his chin from a cut lip. He re jected any thoughts of letire- ment. “I’m going to take some time off and enjoy myself,” he said. “I will be back.” NOW BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE.
