We l|ave separate Girls' Dorm. to collect three million dollars to reconstruct Bach Mai Hospital which was destroyed by U. S. B52s just before Christmas. Among the sponsors for the campaign are former Attorney General Ramsey Clark; play wright Arthur Miller; Georgia state legislator Julian Bond; James Armstrong, President of the Church and Society of the United Methodist Church; Rever end Michael Allen, Chaplain of the Berkeley School of Divinity of Yale University; Dr. Charles McGraw, Boston psychiatrist and co-chairperson of Medical Aid for Indochina, and Virginia Warner, mother of James Warner, Ameri can serviceman held in the DRV since 1967. Joni Mitchell has a new album, “For the Roses.” Joni has been putting out albums for a long time and from the historical as pect, “For the Roses” offers some of the clearest message-songs she has ever done. Also, over half of this new batch have a related theme, the well-known “we didn’t quite make it together did we?” bit. Her piano is the dominant in strument and her voice the guid ing force in each of the album’s songs, all original. Joni obviously knows what a hole in the heart feels like. The question is, who put it there ? My guess is Sweet Baby James Taylor. Now that he and Carly Simon are married, old friend Joni was obliged to vent her feel ings. Joni sings about a “rock and roll man” who wears sus penders. This and her songs “Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire” (about Taylor’s reoccurring her oin habit) and “Blonde in the Bleachers,” an autobiographical thing about her unsatisfied yearn ings, lend evidence that Joni had a certain man in mind. But whether it was Taylor or Cap tain Beefheart, the album is just as enjoyable. “You Turn Me On, I’m a Ra dio” is just great. Her tune and lyrics complement each other beautifully. “Banquet” is anoth er good track, but one of her characteristic type where you can’t remember the tune even right after listening to it. But she never does a bad song, some are just better than others. Besides a new husband, Carly Simon also has a new release, “No Secrets.” If for no other reason, this one’s gonna sell big because of the album cover. Carly is the perfect picture of a good- looking American girl. She is also rich (her granddad is the Simon in the Simon and Shuster Publishing House) and she has on such a well rounded shirt. As far as the record’s music goes, it has strong, strong vocals and fair lyrics. I couldn’t quite get into her “Daddy, I’m No Vir gin Theme,” which runs through five of the 10 songs, but there is much more than lyrics to her stuff. Some of the biggest names in rock happened by the studio when “No Secrets” was put together. Fresh off the Stones’ U. S. tour were Texan Bobby Keys and Nicky Hopkins, on tenor sax and piano, respectively. Ex-Domino Jim Gordon played drums and everybody’s favorite bass player, Klaus Voorman, was there also. For background vocals were Paul and Linda McCarnery, James Taylor, and — wow — Mick Jagger pitched in. If I hear one more disc jockey follow “You’re So Vain” with “and that was Carly Simon and Mick Jag ger” I think I’ll need a container. So what? Who is Mick Jagger and since when could he sing ? But still, it’s an energetic num ber well-suited to Carly’s voice. If James Taylor (who is 24) can keep his head clear for a while, maybe he can write some songs that Carly (who is 28) can really let loose on. I hope so. She is one of the best female singers around. GEnERALTELEPHOnE COmPAFiy OF THE SOUTHiUEST “When we seem to bomb in the name of America,” Ramsey Clark said at the press conference, “some Americans are deeply grieved and tortured by that bombing and renounce it as alien to the spirit of this country and pledge to do what they can to undo the damage, at least to this little life-giving facility, the Bach Mai Hospital.” The goal of three million dol lars was set because Nguyen Van Tin, Vice Minister of Public Health of the DRV, stated that it would take that sum to rebuild Bach Mai. In the four days prior to the press conference, a quar ter of a million dollars was al ready collected. The campaign is expected to include door-to-door and streetcorner canvassing as well as benefit concerts and drives. The Bach Mai Hospital was actually a hospital and medical school combined. Eight hundred students were being trained in medicine when the hospital was BATTALION CLASSIF, WANT AD RATES One day oc per word onal day 4c per word each addition Minimum charge—75c Classified Display $1.00 per column inch each insertion FOR SALE ’72 Honda 500. $1,100.
