Page 8 College Station, Texas Wednesday, November 29, 1972 THE BATTALia Seaman To Continue As Shocker Grid Coach WICHITA, Kan. <A>)_Bob Sea man, head football coach at Wich ita State University, and his en tire staff will remain at WSU through the 1973 grid season, Athletic Director Ted Bredehoft said Monday. “Wichita State needs continuity and stability and . . . Seaman and his staff will remain through the 1973 season to provide it,” Brede hoft said in a statement issued by the university’s athletic office. The statement came after Bredehoft was critical of WSU's football program in an interview last week with the Wichita Eagle. “A winning tradition has been initiated with this year’s 6-5 sea son, the first of its kind since 1963,” Bredehoft added. “Coach Seaman and I have vis ited and I believe with continued dedication and enthusiasm, he and his staff will be able to keep WSU on the winning side of the ledger as they continue their efforts to bring outstanding student - ath letes to Shocker country.” Bredehoft declined additional comment and Seaman would not comment on Monday’s statement by his boss nor on the previous interview statements contributed to Bredehoft. Seaman succeeded Ben Wilson as head coach in the middle of the 1970 season when Wilson and 30 other persons were killed in the crash of an airplane in Colo rado. The plane was carrying the Shocker football team to Logan, Utah, for a game. In the interview, Bredehoft, who came to Wichita State after serving as assistant athletic di rector at Arizona State, was quot ed as saying he was used to 9-2, 10-1 and 11-0 records, adding: “If it is in the best interest of Wichita State, there is no reason why we couldn’t buy up the ad ditional year on Seaman’s con tract.” Seaman, who was an Ohio high school coach before joining the WSU staff under Wilson in 1969, has one year to go on a three- year contract as head coach here. Texas A&M will end its four game schedule with the Shockers next season and in the three pre vious meetings, A&M has won by scores of 41-14, 41-7 and 36-13. Seaman recorded a 3-14 record before having his first winning season in 1972 with a 6-5 record. In last year’s A&M-Wichita State game, the Shockers re turned the first two A&M kick offs for touchdowns while taking a 13-6 lead early in the second quarter. The running of junior halfback Mark Green, who rushed for a career high of 165 yards, and timely pitches from then starting quarterback Lex James put the outmanned Shockers under. Last year’s clash was the first and only game to be played in Wichita as the first two and the final game will be played in Col lege Station. \ 'Tfc Bob Seaman M m M Wl m WE GIVE WE GIVE budget minded?
