After Saturday night’s perform ance, you better believe that those Ags are indeed back. No member of the 12th man had better walk away from that game angry. We were all disappointed because the team did not receive a well de served win, but more important, we were darn proud of the level of play. The Aggies performed this past weekend in a manner that all sports should be played. The game against Texas Tech revealed an unmatched plateau of spirit, en thusiasm, desire and lethal po tential, and the players have been commended abundantly. Another point worth noting is the 12th man that was present, and the spirit, enthusiasm, desire and potential it possesses. This game and all the criticism which has flown wildly these last few weeks has, in my opinion, taught us all an overdue lesson that should not be forgotten for quite some time. Namely, that to win is not as important as society insists if desire and excellent sportsmanship are the focal con- cerns. Let us all try to maintain this high standard of feeling. Ronald Bento ’73 ★ ★ ★ Editor: Immunity is a word that can apply to things both good and bad. Immunity to disease is good, Nixon Vetoes Anti-Pollution Bill WASHINGTON <A>> _ Presi dent Nixon Tuesday night vetoed a $24,6-billion bill aimed at rid ding American waters of all pol lution by 1985. But the Senate quickly voted to override the veto. The Senate vote was 52 to 12, nine more than the two-thirds majority required to override. The House is expected to vote on overriding Wednesday afternoon. The Senate vote came early Crider’s (Continued from page 1) H u d e Have the § machine,, but only I'ide tfttfoV'to class, Sf 1 he said. Crider said he would like to form a unicycle club at A&M. Only five members are needed to form one in addition to a fac- /ulty sponsor. A unicycle would not be a re- . quirement for joining the club /and its purpose would be to pro- *mote interest in the fun aspect of the unicycle. Anyone interested should con tact Crider at 845-6178 or at Dorm 1, Room 121. Wednesday, two hours after Nix on had slapped down the $24.6- billion measure by calling it stag gering and budget-wrecking. Nixon said any spending bill this year which would lead to higher prices and taxes “defies signature by this president.” He said “I have nailed my colors to the mast on this issue; the political winds can blow where they may.” He had asked for a water-pol lution bill that would have com mitted $6 billion in federal funds over a three-year period and he called the bill which came to his desk “a staggering budget-wreck ing $24 billion.” He said every dollar this bill asked above his proposal “would exact a price from the consumer in the form of inflated living costs or from the taxpayer in the form of a new federal tax bite or both.” Nixon said he was prepared for the possibility that his veto would be overridden by Congress, say ing: “The defeat of my proposal for a spending ceiling showed that many senators and congress men are simply AWOL in our fight against higher taxes.” He said if his veto is not sus tained, the issue will be clearly drawn. “As with the spending ceiling, so with this bill, a vote to sustain the veto is a vote against a tax increase. A vote to override the veto is a vote to in crease the likelihood of higher taxes.” .. ,(, He said that if his veto is sus tained, it would by no means terminate existing federal water- quality programs. Legislature Breaks Off Insurance Talks AUSTIN (A 1 )—Legislators quit in a huff at midnight after break ing off negotiations on an insur ance rate bill, and an aide said Gov. Preston Smith had gone to bed still debating whether to call a record-setting fifth special ses sion. The word that the governor had decided to sleep on it was relayed shortly after midnight, and it was also announced he would hold a news conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Speaker Rayford Price told House members he understood the session was to start at 10 a.m. Cbe Battalion Opinions expressed in The Battalion are those of the student writers only. The immunity the bicyclists at A&M enjoy is certainly becoming bad. This is not a letter to knock the registration of bicycles or to support the strict enforcement of the parking regulations. It is a letter to urge all the students and faculty that ride bicycles to ob serve the traffic regulations of the university. The people who run stops signs and weave across the road create a very dangerous situation. After crashing my motorcycle avoiding a bicycle which ran a stop sign, I feel re-enforced in my belief that the bicycles should not be immune to the rules. Be fore we have a real tragedy and get someone killed, let us all ob serve the rules and keep all the good Aggies alive and pedaling.
