This is the potential loss from nonresident fees at state schools if adult status, legal residence and voting rights for students in college towns make them ex empt from nonresident tuition charges, according to Dr. Rob ert F. Carbone, dean of the School of Education at the Uni versity of Maryland. On behalf of the National As sociation of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, Car bone surveyed nearly 400 four- year colleges which are members of these groups. “If adult status and voting rights for college-age citizens eliminate nonresident tuition charges in public colletsp '' 4 ' universities,’’ Carbone sa:;,B' s * effect on higher-edueatii ;I ets will be staggering.’' P as Schools surveyed by qM enrolled this fall 463,357rf 11 ' dent students who paid; J^' 11 ^ differential of $329,090 1 («.B ui ' t - i About half the institifaj n 1 spending, Carbone said. rJ 10 ed they had had inquiries T nents to reclassification.
