[HE BATTALION Thursday, November 11, 1971 College Station, Texas Page 3 Dowdy was given $25,000, witness testifies in trial BALTIMORE, Md. OP> — Na an H. Cohen testified Wednes day he arranged to give $25,000 to Rep. John Dowdy, D-Tex., as part of an attempt to stop a De partment of Justice investigation. Cohen, the leadoff witness in Dowdy’s bribery-conspiracy trial, is the former president of the Monarch Construction Co., a de funct home improvement firm from Silver Springs, Md. The disbarred attorney from Virginia Beach, Va., said “there were illegal acts at Monarch,” and the money was to gain im munity from government prose cution in exchange for testimony before a House committee. Cohen contended the money, packed into an attache case, was given to Dowdy at the airport in Atlanta, Ga., on Sept. 22, 1965, by Marvin C. Clark, a former sales manager for Monarch. Dowdy, now 59, was at the time a ranking member of the House Committee for the District of Columbia. Cohen said he once visited Dowdy’s office to confirm the agreement made by Clark. Cohen admitted from the stand that Monarch had violated vari ous federal laws in financing home improvements and that split financing was his “major fear of prosecution.” After leaving Monarch in Au- Sophomore class council meetings open to everyone "The Sophomore Council meet ing will now be called the Sopho more Class meeting,” according to Randy Maness, class president. Mobil Oil awards engineering grants The Mobil Oil Foundation has awarded A&M four engineering grants totaling $5,000. Louis Castelli, of Corpus Chris- tii division general manager for Mobil Oil Corp., presented the unrestricted grants to Engineer ing Dean Fred J. Benson in cam pus ceremonies Wednesday. The Petroleum Engineering De partment received a $3,500 award and $500 presentations went to the Chemical, Civil and Mechani cal Engineering Departments. gust 1965, because there was a “whole passel of trouble,” Cohen started the National Research and Development Corp. At that time, Cohen said, he and Clark developed a “front door-back-door approach.” On one hand, they planned to submit documents alleging un fairness in government housing programs toward individual con tractors. Then, Cohen was to seek immunity to testify. Cohen said he borrowed $16,- 000 from his mother and other sums elsewhere to make up the $25,000 which he took home the night of Sept. 21, 1965, and be gan to write down the serial numbers. “It seemed like a good idea,” he said. “I might later have to prove the money transfer.” Cohen said he quit writing down the serial numbers after going through about three-quar ters of the bills. The list was introduced into evidence. East Pakistan independence inevitable, speaker declares Independence for East Pakistan is inevitable, a leader of the Bangla Desh movement declared Tuesday at A&M. Dr. A. R. Mallick, former pres ident of Chittagong University in Bangla Desh (East Pakistan), said the West Pakistani govern ment willfully violated basic hu man rights of the Bengalis in East Pakistan for the past 24 years. The former chairman of the Pakistan Council of University Presidents spoke to 200 persons during a meeting sponsored by Phi Alpha Theta, international history honor society. Dr. Mallick claimed recent Pakistani history “is a history of great economic and social in justice to the people of East Paki stan.” He said the central government has tried to destroy the rich Ben gali culture, including the Ben gali language spoken by 56 per cent of the East Pakistani people. “The Bengalis and the West Pakistanis are culturally, ethic ally, linguistically and geograph ically two different peoples,” Dr. Mallick said. “They were united together under the umbrella of Pakistan in 1947 in the name of a democratic nation where social and economic justice would pre vail. “But plans to develop the Ben galis continued under the leader ship of the West Pakistan civil and military clique,” he added. Dr. Mallick claimed the last victim of mockery was Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, whose party won the December election last year with 98 per cent of the East Pakistani vote. “The Pakistani Army, instead of the promised transfer of pow er, cracked down on the unarmed civilians in Dacca on the night of March 25, 1971, with tanks and machine guns,” he continued. “Some 35,000 people were killed in Dacca that night,” Dr. Mallick said. He left the country to escape the army rule. He claims army atrocity con tinues today, with over one mil lion innocent Bengalis killed and 10 million Bengalis have taken refuge in India. “Independence for Bangla Desh is inevitable,” the noted historian said. He appealed to all nations to realize the magnitude of the movement and help achieve its goals. Nations that do not wish to help, he continued, should at least not assist the military govern ment of West Pakistan in their attempt “to suppress 75 million democracy-loving people of Bang la Desh.” Dr. Mallick illustrated his talk with photographs showing the current problems in East Paki stan.
