WASHINGTON <AP)_The Unit ed States marshaled land, sea and airforces Monday for possible use in Jordan, but officials insisted that evacuation of Americans is the only assignment being consid ered now. And even that didn’t seem imminent. The Pentagon said infantry and paratroop units at home and in Europe were placed on alert, and extra C130 transports were posi tioned overnight in Europe to air lift these troops wherever and whenever needed. Some U.S. medical units in Eu rope also were alerted, and a third Navy aircraft carrier, the John F. Kennedy, was en route to join the two carriers already in the Mediterranean. Pentagon officials said the alerts were for specific units, not for all services, and do not in volve moving any Army troops. There are about 400 Americans in Jordan, mostly in Amman, and 38 of the 54 hijacked airline host ages still held by Palestinian guerrillas are Americans. At the State Department, press officer Robert J. McCloskey said the United States has spoken publicly of possible intervention to bring American citizens out of Jordan, and said there has been some tentative discussion with the Jordanian government about air ports that might be used. But he said there has been no recommendation from the U.S. embassy in Amman for evacua tion of Americans. This appar ently means that U.S. embassy officials feel there is no immedi ate danger. McCloskey said that if U.S. military forces are sent in to remove American citizens from Jordan it is hoped that the evac uation will be peaceful. McCloskey said the United States has decided to send two military field hospitals to Jor dan and is discussing arrange ments with the International Red Cross for getting them into the war-torn country. He said Jordan has appealed for the field hospitals. Officials said they probably would be manned by American military personnel — principally doctors and nurses — because only people trained in their use know how to set them up. Six new members join Architecture Six new faculty members have been announced by the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Dean Edward J. Romieniec said the new men include Fred Klatt Jr. and David G. Woodcock, asso ciate professors; Dr. Robert L. Bradley, A. C. Hamblett and E. Dudley Watkins, assistant pro fessors; and Robert O. Segner re ceived his undergraduate degree from A&M last year and is now studying for a master’s degree. Klatt, who will teach in the Landscape Architecture Depart ment, earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from A&M. Hamblett, who joins the Envi ronmental Design Department, earned his undergraduate degree /at Texas Tech University and master’s at the University of Vir ginia. Watkins and Woodcock will di rect the graduate programs in building design and urban design, respectively, for the Architecture Department. Watkins is a grad uate of Oklahoma State Univer sity. Woodcock, from Manchester, England, spent a year at A&M in 1962 on a Fulbright Professor ship. Griffiths elected air control head Prof. John F. Griffiths of A&M has been elected chairman of the Southwestern section of the Air Pollution Control Association. The organization meets once a month in Houston to discuss prob lems of abatement of air con taminates through education. Fundamental and practical knowl edge applications are brought out. Griffiths, faculty member of NEW MISS TEXAS, Bellinda Myrick, poses with crown perched precariously atop her head Thursday after taking over. The Odessa brunette, first runner-up in the Miss Texas Pageant in July, was elevated to Miss Texas to succeed Phyllis George, the new Miss America.
