Holmgreen received a B.S. de gree in agriculture from Texas A&M, served as assistant county agent in Dallas County from 1923-25 and was county agent in Galveston County from 1925-27. He joined the Agricultural Ex tension Service headquarters at Texas A&M in 1927 as poultry husbandry specialist. He later served as administrative officer of the corn, hog and rice control program and administrator and supervisor of Agricultural Ad justment Administration Pro grams in Texas. In 1941 Holmgreen became bus iness manager of Texas A&M. He joined the Army in April, 1943, serving in military govern ment with the Fifth Army in North Africa, Italy and Austria until 1946, when he returned to Texas A&M as business manager. He was called to serve with the Mission for American Aid to Greece in the summer of 1947. Holmgreen was appointed chief of the Food and Agriculture Di vision, Economic Cooperation Ad ministration Mission to the Unit ed Kingdom in 1948 and a year later joined the staff of the Washington office. Holmgreen was appointed dep uty director of the Food and Ag riculture Division, Economic Co operation Administration in 1950 and director on April 5, 1951. ECA now is the Agency for In ternational Development (AID). He retired in 1959 and returned to Bryan. Holmgreen took part in two amphibious landings during World War II—at Salerno and at Anzio. He received the Legion of Merit and Bronze Arrowhead for merit orious service during the Anzio landing. Brig. Gen. Edgar E. Hume, Holmgreen’s commanding officer, wrote in his commendation on Feb. 3, 1946: “Your- work at Anzio is so well known that you are often called ‘Anzio Holm- green.’ “I know that you risked your life again and again in the per formance of your duties and in the carrying out of humanitarian work for the refugees there. You organized and directed the evac uation of nearly 20,000 people from the beachhead without the loss of a single one. . . “Your office was bombed out three times in Anzio and some of your personnel were killed or dis abled by wounds. Yours was the last office of all the sections of the VI Corps to move under ground. . . When we took Leghorn you were put in charge of the city and managed to bring order out of chaos at a time when the port was vitally needed by the American and British Navies,” General Hume wrote. Holmgreen received the Bronze Star for operations in Italy and the Army Commendation Ribbon, plus six foreign decorations in cluding the Order of the Crown (Italy). He was discharged from active duty as a full colonel. When Holmgreen was asked to head the mission to Greece in 1947, over 70 per cent of the country was under Communist control and the country was in bitter civil war. Holmgreen hand picked 20 specialists from throughout the United States, in cluding the late B. F. Vance of Bryan, and that group led the redevelopment of the country. When Holmgreen went to Lon don in 1948 he headed the new “Marshall Plan” mission to the United Kingdom. The program included about one billion dollars of U. S. agricultural commodities used in place of dollar grants to European countries. The old “Marshall Plan Agen cy” presented Holmgreen its “Distinguished Public Service Award” upon his retirement, the highest award offered by the ci vilian agency. Holmgreen’s various assign ments took him throughout the world, except for Russia, China, Australia and South Africa. He assembled about 1,000 ag ricultural technicians and 50 home economists to work in over seas posts, a number of them Texas A&M graduates. His family reports Holmgreen had a deep love and devotion to Texas A&M, and felt he owed his success to the training received at the college.
