. • - m /: ngp Hanover lauds reserve fire-fighting unit Army Reserve Brig:. Gen. Joe G. Hanover of Bryan says a fire fighting platoon under his com mand is probably better trained than firemen on a regular Army post after completing the Fire men’s Training School program Friday. One of the final activities of the Huntsville-based unit was an inspection and review by General Hanover and members of his staff. The 420th Engineering Bri gade commanding officer’s inspec tion, however, was a little differ ent from most military inspec tions. He watched as members of the 463rd Engineer Platoon fought house and overhead fuel pipe fires and rescued victims from a smoke-filled building and a par tially destroyed two-story struc ture. It was a show of knowledge following two weeks of active duty training at the A&M facility. “The Firemen’s Training School staff is highly motivated and dedicated,” General Hanover de clared. “This enthusiasm has been passed on to our people.” Hanover said the 17 men com pleting the course are considered “qualified firemen” with military occupation specialties. He noted the Army has no fire training school but assigns per sonnel to fire departments on posts for on-the-job training. “For this type of unit, the fire training offers the absolute maxi mum of instruction and it is the most appropriate thing we could do,” the general remarked. John R. Rauch, who coordinated training for the FTS, payed the reservists his highest compli ment: “I would not hesitate one moment to go into any fire with any individual or the entire group.” He said the reservists “never asked for an inch” despite hot, humid days accented by fire heat and the heat held inside protective clothing worn during training ex ercises. Temperatures hit the high 90s several days. Rauch observed the platoon has exceptional personnel able to learn rapidly. He termed the pro gram “very successful.” Lt. Jerry Crowder, platoon commander, lauded his men for an exceptional performance. “Each man gave the full meas ure of his talents during the entire training period,” Crowder said. “Because of our special as signment, the best possible train ing could be received only at the Texas A&M facilities.
