THE BATTALION Page 8 College Station, Texas Wednesday, June 17, 1970 Sports notes Rati to play in Class A for Dodgers Doug Rau, Texas A&M’s-bril liant southpaw pitcher, has signed a bonus contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers and will report to their Class A club at Bakersfield, Calif., in the Cali fornia State League. Rau, who posted a 9-1 record this past season as a junior, was the Dodgers’ first-round draft choice recently. Earlier this week he was named to the sec ond-team All - America squad picked by the baseball coaches association of America. In three seasons at Texas A&M, Rau had an 18-7 record and a 1.69 earned run average. He was a two-time All-South- west Conference selection and set a school record for strikeouts with 228 in 190% innings during his Aggie career. His only loss this past season was a 1-0 verdict to TCU in which he hurled a four - hitter and the run scored against him was unearned. He started 11 games this past season, completed 7, allowed only 39 hits and posted 82 strikeouts. Coach Tom Chandler said he had mixed emotions about Rau’s signing. "I am happy he will have the opportunity to play professional baseball and per haps go on to the big leagues, yet, at the same time, I am sad dened because he won’t be with us for his senior season.” Rau, from Columbus, Tex., is a finance major with a near straight-A average. ★ ★ ★ Mills leads Aggie thinclads in NCAA meet Curtis Mills, the world’s premier 440-yard dashman, leads the Ag gie track contingent in the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, this week end. Mills, a junior, set the world mark of 44.7 in winning the NCAA 440 last summer. He said this week he thinks it will take at least a 45.0 to win the 440 this time. Coach Charlie Thomas said he wouldn’t be surprised to see Cur tis run a 45.0 or better. “What ever it takes to win, I think Curtis will run it.” The squad will enter the 440 relay, the 440 hurdles, the high jump and the 440 dash. David Prince is entered in the 440 hurdles; Ben Greathouse and Marvin Taylor in the high jump and the 440 relay team will con sist of Scotty Hendricks, Curtis Mills, Marvin Mills and Donny Rogers, running in that order. The Aggies received a severe jolt last week at Wichita when Rockie Woods, anchoring the 440 relay team, re-injured a leg muscle and pulled up about 30 yards after getting the baton. “Rockie was about a yard back of eventual winner Arizona State and appeared about to take the lead when he pulled up,” Thomas said. Thomas said he was elated with Hendricks’ running at Wichita. “Scotty was clocked in 9.4 during the prelims of the 100-yard dash and ran a 9.3 in the semifinals but didn’t make it to the finals because of an unusually fast field. That 9.3 ties the school rec ord set earlier by Woods.” ★ ★ ★ McKittrick signs with baseball team Texas A&M baseball coach Tom Chandler has signed Fort Worth Western Hills catcher Neil Mc Kittrick to a baseball scholarship. McKittrick, 6-0, 185, was an all-district selection at Western Hills. He throws right and bats right. He was vice president of the student body and plans to major in architecture at A&M.
