Group to assist college Wimbish named to receive post THE BATTALION Page 6 College Station, Texas Wednesday, June 17, The first 50 recipients of the Texas A&M doctor of philosophy degree in education have voted to organize, with one of the group’s purposes to assist the College of Education. The “First 50” was formed at a Tuesday banquet in the Me morial Student Center with chairman of the 50 Ph.D.’s ad visory committees honored. A plaque bearing the “First 50’s” names was presented to Education Dean Frank Hubert by Dr. Wesley K. Summers, chairman of the organization’s planning committee and Bryan Public Schools’ director of in struction. Hubert, recognizing Dr. Paul Hensarling’s efforts in setting up the education doctorate pro gram and contributions that led to the formation of the College of Education last year, said the group should be known as “Hen sarling’s Half Hundred.” “This group is great testi mony,” the dean added, “to the fine bedrock you planted in the old Education Department for the beginnings of the College of Education.” He predicted the second fifty will graduate by 1972. The “First 50” was the result of discussion in a 1966 seminar of doctoral students conducted by Hensarling. “The fellows wanted some way to recognize the beginning of the doctor of philosophy degree in education at Texas A&M,” re called Hensarling, who headed the former Department of Edu cation and Psychology from which the new college was or ganized. Bob Wimbish, master’s degree candidate in the Urban Planning Department, has been named re cipient of the Urban Studies Fel lowship for the Houston Model City Agency. Dr. J. W. Allen to head Department of Economics W« The Waxahachie native will provide technical assistance and liaison with the university for planning and community develop ment for both the agency and local citizens groups, noted Prof. Joseph J. McGraw, head of the Urban Planning Department. Dr. John W. Allen has been appointed head of the Economics Department, announced the new College of Liberal Arts dean, W. David Maxwell. Dr. Allen, 34, has held the position in an acting capacity since last September. He succeeds Dr. M. L. Green- hut, now distinguished professor of economics. The department has 85 undergraduate, 65 graduate students, 23 faculty members and offeres bachelor, master’s and Ph.D. degrees. Associate professor of econom ics, Allen has been on the faculty three years. He directer under graduate studies in the depart ment from 1967 to 1969.
