Aggie sprinter Rockie Woods was quoted to the effect that “after running seven races nothing felt good.” This was certainly the feeling of the rest of the squad as they take life a little easier after seven weeks of hard running. The long hard season was made worse by the fact of the poor weather which made conditioning impossible. The Ags had to practice their relay handoffs often in cold and rainy weather. This “mission impossible” training came in handy last weekend in the conference meet as the Aggies “conservatively” ran a 39.7 440 relay race, making sure of their handoffs in the Houston drizzle. The Aggies were the only team who wanted to run the prelims Friday come rain or shine, because of several of the Ag performers who had to double-up on several events. The tracksters return to the salt mines on the weekend of May 16, as the 440-yard relay and mile relay teams will travel to the Freedom Games in Philadelphia. The following weekend the 440-yard relay, mile relay and the world record-holding 880 relay team will journey to the California Relays in Modesto. This will be the last time for 880-yard bosses to carry the baton this year. On May 29-30, the Aggies return to Texas to compete in the Meet of Champions in Houston. Coach Thomas and Nelson will take a full complement of runners to this meet. The first weekend in June finds the Aggies returning to California to run in the Compton Relays in the Los Angeles Coliseum. The 440-yard relay and mile relay teams will be the only Aggie participants. In a warm-up for the NCAA Meet a number of Aggies will travel to Wichita, Kansas, for the National Federation Meet. The Ags will enter the relays, and several individual events in the meet. The grand daddy of them all is the weekend of June 20 at Des Moines, Iowa. Drake University will host the meet on its Tartan track and several NCAA records are certainly in jeopardy. Curtis Mills has a possibility to better his 44.7 in the 440-yard dash and the A&M 440-yard relay team may have a shot at the NCAA record of 38.7. Reuben John Englert, Jr., is a pretty quiet young man, until he steps out on a baseball field, that is. Then his chatter comes in loud from left field, and his bat makes more noise than a machine gun. Through 17 games, the Texas A&M sophomore from Big Spring was third in the nation in hitting with a .500 average. After 31 games, R. J. (as he prefers to be called) is leading the Aggies in hitting with a .400 mark. He is one of the big reasons A&M has won 12 conference games for a 24-7 season record. The young lefty’s contribution to A&M’s success has surpassed expectations, but maybe the ex pectations were too low in the first place. Englert’s past record indicates that he has always been able to hit. He batted .459 as a senior high school and hit .343 for the Aggie freshmen last year. He didn’t become a fixture in coach Tom Chandler’s starting lineup until the 11th game when he had four hits in five at-bats in a 9-2 win over Missouri. Englert also got four hits in an 11-0 win over SWC foe SMU and has had two three-hit games. “R. J. is an aggressive ball player," Chandler says. “He at tacks the ball in the field and at the plate. He’s a smart hitter who hits the hall where it’s pitched instead of trying to overpower it. He’s really done a good job.” SPORTS ILLUSTRATED RUNS AffipTICLE The Texas Aggies have returned to the Sports Illustrated scene as there’s a story dealing with the Mills Brothers, Rockie Woods and Donny Rogers of the 880-yard relay fame. A major part of the article deals with the A&M disqualification of the mile relay team at the Drake Relays. The story is in the May 4 issue. The story follows a picture of Aggie hurler Bruce Katt in the magazines “Faces In the Crowd”. Katt struck out 19 SMU Mustangs in his opening SWC start. He has since been bothered with a sore elbow and has been ineffective against opposition. Englert is also a good fielder who has made several outstanding plays in left field, including a daubleplay against SMU by dou bling a runner off first base. R. J. is a top candidate for All-SWC, but more than that he would like to be SWC champion. If his hitting continues, R. J. and the Aggies will have a good shot with Thursday and Friday. BATTALION AWARD NOMINATIONS As we head for that seventh day in May, the nominations for the May edition of the hallowed Battation Award are beginning to roll in.
