This project aims to acquaint young people with the conserva tion program. The design effort combined the artistic forces of Virginia Nepo- dal, head designer at Greef for 17 years, and her husband, Don Eckelberry, the well-known artist, ornithologist and conservationist (he is the recipient of an Audu bon conservation award) with the aims of the fabric company. “The idea was to choose those nature subjects that would be authentic and beautiful at the same time, and that was not an easy task. We tried to select the most artistic subject matter,” ex plained Miss Nepodal. The subjects they chose are in deed beautiful. There are the feathery ferns. There are the protected wildflowers, which may be picked sparingly, if at all— Dutchman’s-breeches, yellow and pink ladyslippers, painted and white trillium, birdfoot violet, yellow wood, sorrel, adder’s- tongue and others. One fabric, a study of trees, depicts the chestnut, which is being harmed by fungus blight; the elm, which is going fast due to beetle destruction; the coast red woods and giant sequoias, which are in great danger; and the bristlecone pine. The delightful bird fabrics in clude mourning doves, ducks, house wrens, veeries and spar rows. The snowy egret is a regal motif among lotus blossoms. Some are Audubon birds; one humming bird is from a Don Eckelberry painting.
