Going ‘On the Air’ a Hectic Experience for KAMU-TV (Continued from page 1) technical crew checked circuits for faulty wiring. The transmitter was fired at 2 Tuesday afternoon and about 20 minutes later, both “finals” had been burned out. “We have a tube-eating trans mitter,” Harvie Nachlinger said. “We turned it on and it ate ’em up.” There have been many times when confusion has been the pass word. If a piece of equipment malfunctions, engineers, techni cians and production men have to work fast to find the problem and correct it. It took three hours this time, but by 5 p.m., Channel 15 was broadcasting again. The dead “finals” were bypassed and power fed to the antenna at about one- tenth the normal level. Although the wattage reduction may affect surrounding areas, no noticeable change can be seen on local tele vision sets. Full power will be resumed as soon as new tubes can be ordered. The need for fast trouble-shoot ing and repair didn’t begin with KAMU-TV’s first broadcast, Sun day, Feb. 15. It began with permission to go on the air granted by the university in August and a sched uled air date set for Dec. 15. Correction The Battalion erroneously re ported Wednesday that only col ored slides would be accepted in the Memorial Student Center overseas photo contest. Paul Scopel, chairman of the Travel Committee, said Wednes day that black and white slides and photos would qualify in the contest also. A crew of full-time staff mem bers and student assistants put in long hours, both late at night and on weekends, building a stu dio and production room, tearing down walls and putting up new ones. The bulk of the transmitter didn’t arrive until November, and more parts were still to come. As the December deadline came closer, long distance phone bills went up, with still no parts. Then General Electric fell vic tim to a major strike. On Dec. 15, BUSIER AGENCY REAL ESTATE • INSURANCE F.H.A.—Veterans and Conventional Loans ARM & HOME SAYINGS ASSOCIATION Home Office: Nevada, Mo. Rael, Office of Summer Session, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona 85721. needed transmitter parts were still sitting on loading docks waiting to be shipped. The new air date was set for Feb. 15. Work continued on all aspects of the station’s operation and, piece by piece, transmitter parts arrived. The last parts arrived just three weeks before the February deadline. Work on the transmitter was completed less than 48 hours before Feb. 15. And even now, work continues with final adjustments being made and improvements being added to present systems. A search is being made for ad ditional lighting instruments in the studio so that improved color can be transmitted to television sets in the home. All of this is being done on the lowest budget possible. The transmitter, though sold on a one year guarantee, is almost 20 years old. The lack of refined, up-to-date equipment has made it necessary to tax the technical engenuity of the station engineers. Mel Chastain, on Tuesday night’s “Viewpoint” show, com mented on the transmitter fail ure during the “Campus and Community Today” program. “That’s what you can expect from low-bid equipment.” He smiled as he said it. The long hours put in by both the technical and production crews, however, have paid off. Technical difficulties have been kept to a minimum, interrupting less than four of the scheduled first 25 and a half hours of broad casting. ATTENTION MAY GRADUATES!
