Page 8 College Station, Texas Thursday, April 24, 1969 THE BA I I '^1 § To Play Or Not Play: Which Is It, Hawk? I By RICHARD CAMPBELL Editor’s Note: Ken Harrelson, No. a In College Sales For Information Call: Ron Hillhouse ’69 (College Master Representative) Fidelity Union Life Insurance Co. 303 College Main — 846-8228 better known as Hawk to the Boston Red Sox fans because of his rather prominent nose, retired from baseball Sunday after learning that he had been traded to the Cleveland Indians in a six-player deal. The follow ing is an open letter to Harrel son. Dear Hawk: Just a short note to find out exactly what your plans are. I keep reading in the newspapers what a raw deal you got by being traded to Cleveland. You said that, and I quote: “Under no cir cumstances will I consent to be ing traded from the Red Sox. All my interests are in Boston and that’s where I want to stay.” But last night you changed your mind and decided that Cleveland wasn’t so bad after all. STUDYING ABOUT WHERE TO GET THE BEST CASUAL SLACKS? : OVER 300 PAIR IN STOCK, ALL COLORS & PATTERNS WE’RE SURE WE CAN GIVE YOU THE RIGHT ANSWER. PERMANENTLY PRESSED SLACKS FROM $7.00 to $12.50 Loupot’s Traditional clothing- at student prices. Hawk, I didn’t mind or say anything when you let your hair grow over your ears and started wearing those mod clothes but, over this theatrical din I must i protest. You told your admiring throngs that the reason for your retire ment was because you stood to lose up to $750,000 in outside business interests in the Boston area. For shame, Hawk, for shame. Don’t you realize that you wouldn’t even be in the po sition of having any big business deals cooking if you hadn’t par ticipated in baseball ? Baseball makes celebrities out of even the smallest of molehills and you, Hawk, fall in the category some where. How dare you stab the game in the back for a measly $750,000. Have you no shame ? I’m sorry, Hawk, you must really be made of that good stuff on the inside because I read this morning that you’ve decided to take a financial beating anyway. Hang the expense, right, Hawk ? After all, you are only 27 years old and your talons are as sharp as they ever were. I also read where you say that your opportunities will probably be the same with Cleveland as they were with Boston. Then what was all the huff about, Hawk ? Did you get your feath ers ruffled by the nasty Boston front office? They can be very trying at times. I sure am glad that you re considered the offer and consented to return, Hawk, because what would baseball be without you ? Once again little kids, only this time in Cleveland, will have an idol to worship and grownups will have a clothes tree to marvel at. All things being considered, Hawk, your return will probably help the game, so welcome back, bellbottom trousers and all. Signed — An Ex-Hawk, Now a Dove NCAA Tightens Recruiting Rules KANSAS CITY UP) — With costs of collegiate athletics be coming a major concern, the Na tional Collegiate Athletic Asso ciation has taken the first step toward tighter restrictions on re cruiting. The number of schools an ath lete may visit was not set pend ing further study. These recommendations and others, will be voted upon by the NCAA Council at its meeting in Seattle Aug. 20-22. In other decisions, the Council at its Florida meetings placed Centenary College of Shreveport, La., on two-year probation for violations of basketball regula tions, endorsed conference repri mands for Minnesota, Texas A&M and the University of Tex as at El Paso and initiated a reprimand for the University of North Carolina.
