Ivey hopes “law enforcement in general will be able to keep abreast of other aspects of science” and be up graded as a result. Ivey, a retired FBI agent, join ed A&M as a research associate this week after 21 years with the nation’s best known law en forcement agency. “We’re confronted with an ex plosion in the field of science,” he explained, “but not in law enforcement.” He pointed out the technological advances have not “materially assisted law enforce ment.” He added it may be due to the “shortcomings of law enforce ment itself.” THE RETAINING of Ivey is expected to form the nucleus of research for better police prac tices, A&M Dean of Engineering Fred J. Benson said. Benson said Ivey’s appointment is a part of “our effort to develop competence to deal with all facts of the urban program. His work will be in practical human re lations.” Ivey said two apparent needs exist in law enforcement. He identified them as training of personnel and financial remuner ation. “Remuneration is much below what it should be,” he said. “Often, officers are paid less than a janitor, although their responsibility is great!,” he dis closed. HE LABELED the “tremen dous authority” of an officer as one prerequisite for needing “background training.” “It has been recognized that pinning on a badge and giving a man a gun, then sending him out to do a job needs to be modi fied,” he said. He added some officers are armed with all sorts of devices, including the law, but do not know how to apply them. As a curbstone opinion, Ivey added that better trained officers will result in a higher detection of crime. He said many persons operate on the premise that they “will not be detected and bring the focus back upon themselves.” Ivey is presently engaged in an inventory, in cooperation with A&M’s Industrial Economics Re search Division, of law enforce ment in the six counties that com prise the Brazos Valley Economic Development Council. They in clude Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison and Robertson counties.
