Stevens joined the ACC faculty in 1948 as assistant professor of history. He was named dean of men in 1950, dean of students in 1952 and assistant president four years later. A native of Richland, Dr. Stev ens received his B.A. degree from ACC and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. He also attended the University of Colorado and was enrolled in the Chaplain’s School of the U. S- Army at Harvard University dur ing World War II. He served as chaplain with an infantry regiment during the European campaigns of Norman dy, Northern France, the Rhine land and the Ardennes. DR. JOHN STEVENS Pilots Complete Their Assignments Air Force officers who studied here have recently completed major assignments. Maj. Carlos Gonzales of Brow'nsville finished his 201st and final combat mission in Vietnam and Capt. Donald A. Cunningham of Lufkin participated in the launch of the 11th Titan III-C fr^om Cape Kennedy. An F-4 Phantom pilot with the 558th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Cam Ranh Bay, Gonzales will be reassigned as an instructor pilot at Davis Monthan AFB, Ariz. The 1954 A&M graduate flew close air support for ground troops and destroyed enemy routes and fortifications in North Vietnam’s southern panhandle. He studied marketing and was a Squadron 7 cadet. Cunningham completed me chanical engineering degree work in 1958 and acquired the master’s at Stanford. The successful rock et launch placed four experiment al satellites in orbit. The mission was part of the Department of Defense Space Experiments Sup port Program managed by Air Force Systems Command at Los Angeles. The captain is a mechanical en gineer in the Titan III Space Ex periments Flight Support Divi sion- In this position, Cunningham helps managed development of satellites for Air Force research and development flights. He was a Sixth Group Staff cadet major and executive officer in the Corps, a Distinguished Student and Distinguished Mili tary Student. 309 books have been contributed to the A&M Library by Dr. Howard G. Applegate, plant sciences faculty member since 1963. The volumes have been incor porated into the library’s science and special collections, noted Dr. James P. Dyke, director. Most of the volumes are in the science collection and deal with anthropology and the history of science. The gift included 75 books is sued by Heritage Press of New York. Trade edition reprints of works originally issued by the Limited Editions Club, the Heri tage volumes are noted examples of good book design, printing and binding. Woodcut illustrations, covers designed from family shields, colorful illumination and classic typography are typified by the Applegate special collections con tributions. Notable volumes include the “Coronation Edition” of “The Faerie Queene,” Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass,” “The Decam eron” written by Giovanni Baccac- cio in the 14th century and W- H. Prescott’s “A History of the Conquest of Mexico,” according to Mrs. Evelyn M. King, special collections librarian. FIRST AND TEN? (AP Wirephoto) Newcomers Club Holds Fall Tour The Texas A&M Newcomers Club holds its fall campus tour Wednesday. The tour starts at the Ramada Inn at 9:30 a.m. where the buses will be loaded, publicity chair woman Mrs. W. E. Black said. It will encompass the new Vet erinary Building, the Vet Hos pital and the Poultry Science Building, followed by a Dutch treat luncheon at the Ramada Inn, Mrs. Black added. Although A&M previously de cided to participate in the con test for NCAA “College Football Centennial Queen,” the selection committee may decide not to en ter the contest if none of the applicants has the right qualifi cations. AF Deadline Nears On 4 Year Grants High school seniors have only until Nov. 15 to apply with Air University Air Force ROTC for four-year financial assistance grants for the 1969-70 school year- In view of the time element, interested seniors should write directly to the Air University, Maxwell AFB, Ala., suggests Air Force Col. Vernon L. Head, pro fessor of aerospace studies at Texas A&M. AFROTC headquarters has an nounced that 500 grants will 1* awarded to students who will en ter the freshman year of collegt in September, 1969. Each grant provides full pay ment of tuition, lab fees, textbook allowance and a non-taxable P per month subsistence payment, Students applying must agree to enter the AFROTC program in» flying category (pilot or navi gator) and enter an Air Font training program upon gradu ation.
