THE BATTALION Thursday, April 4, 1968 College Station, Texas Page 3 Sound Off Editor, The Battalion: HOWDY! Paul Scopel is my name and I am a candidate for the run-off election for Secreftary- Treasurer of the Class of 1971. I ask for your support because I feel that my qualifications and ideas are acceptable to our entire class. During the course of this cam paign, I have been asked what are my motives for becoming Sec retary-Treasurer. I have replied first, that I major in Accounting; thus, I feel that I am competent and prepared for the position of Treasurer. As to the position of Secretary, I think that this officer should inform the class members of the decisions of the other of ficers and the state of the class treasury. Such information could be provided in a monthly column in The Battalion, if possible. In closing, I wish to thank those who supported me in the prelimi nary elections last week. Again, I ask for your support, and to the entire Class of 1971, I ask that you vote for me to help insure the BEST INFORMED and the MOST THRIFTY Sophomore Class possible! PAUL A. SCOPEL ’71 Candidate for Secre tary-Treasurer ★ ★ ★ Editor, The Battalion: A few nights ago I witnessed something that destroyed most of the pride that I had felt in going to A&M. A fellow student from Atlanta, Georgia, was tricked into leaving a Northgate restaurant by a mob of “vigilantes”. Once outside, the vigilantes grabbed the student and dragged him into an alley where they cut his hair and mustache. Not to be confused with the people that wear country and western clothing,- the vigilantes held the “haircut party” under the pretense of wanting to make the student a “good” Aggie. These actions remind me of the Rus sian’s Bolshevik Revolution when fellow comrades wanted to make everyone a good “commie.” Do these protectors of A&M’s student quality realize that in America people have the right to dress the way they wish, say what they wish, and pursue happiness in any manner they choose according to the Constitution of the United States ? Of course there is a limi tation to pursuit of happiness, that being the condition that it doesn’t destroy the freedoms, pri vacy, or rights of other citizens. Also our laws prescribe punish ment for such social deviants. The students involved in the cutting of the other student’s hair have placed themselves in a posi tion that, if caught, they could be disciplined by school authori ties (contrary to their belief that a University counselor gave them authority to act as they did). Also the victim can file charges against these students. I firmly believe that the ma jority of students on campus and off feel as I do and view the ac tions of this minority as indica tive of adolescents in high school. At the same time, however, they may also disapprove of the ap pearance of the student that was shaved. If you disagree with someone’s appearance on campus and you feel that he is in violation of school policy, then file a com plaint with the Campus Security, your dormitory counselor, or the Office of Student Affairs. If on the other hand you are bored and have a case of spring fever then get with someone that is suffer ing from the same problem and cut each others hair. If you insist on giving hair cuts and causing trouble don’t hide behind “good Aggies” and say you are ridding the school of “peaceniks.” Instead, admit you are trying to release boredom. You say you represent the Coun try and Western Klan—I doubt it. Among the members of your vigilantes there are a few that bring disgust to the minds of those that know them. Some of these vigilantes have long records in the school files for violating University rules. Need I say that those on the vigilante committee are walking on thin ice, and that they aren’t getting any lighter. If there are those that feel they have been given University sanctioning, then they had better check the person who sanctioned their action—I have, and he has assured me that in no way did he sanction, okay, or encourage such behavior. I challenge you to defend your posi tion by explaining in the Battal ion your source of authority. Tim Sorrells ’69 HURRY—This is the last week to play "Lucky 13"!
