Students in a Texas A&M Uni versity aerospace engineering “idea course” have studied the possibilities of a new type air craft. The tandem-wing, jet-powered plane designed for cargo handling stability was performance- checked by a student with the likely-sounding aerospace engi neer’s name of Jett. M. B. (Dub) Jett, senior aero engineering major from Seago- ville, has a 2.9G grade point ratio and several other interests he ap plied to preparations for his aero space future. THE SON of Mr. and Mrs. Bar ney B. Jett, Route 1, Seagoville, has flown model planes 13 years. Dub built and flew national cham pions three times. He constructed a model of the two-wing craft for testing in the Aerospace Engineering Depart ment’s 3-by-5 foot wind tunnel. “It is the most beautiful model I’ve ever seen,” commented Prof. Charles Rodenberger, instructor of the special problems course in which students worked on various projects with new idea appeal. It has a forward-swept rear wing and no stabilizer as such. Jett, who graduated second in his class at Spruce High and con siders Dallas his home, spent about 400 hours on performance analysis of the plane that appears to be flying two directions at the same time. “The two-wing configuration could possibly allow large center of gravity shifts due to improper loading and still have stable fly ing characteristics,” the 20-year- old stated. JETT SAID several stability problems need to be ironed out but from the standpoint of light transport and short-haul passen ger service, the aircraft has pos sibilities. “This is especially true with the addition of two extra engines providing sufficient thrust for vertical take off and landing,” he added. “The plane could pull up to a dock as if it were a truck, load quickly without strict adher ence to load trim and fly away.” He said stability problems “can not be settled with anything short of a full scale wind tunnel test.” JETT COLLECTED project ma terial while working for Ling- Temco-Vaught last summer. He analyzed performance in terms of altitude, power settings, weight, range, fuel consumption and air speed by computer. He wrote the program and obtained perform ance data from A&M and LTV computers. Jett attended Arlington State a year before entering A&M in 1965. He is a student member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Gamma Tau, Phi Kappa Phi, the Texas Society of Professional Engineers and American Institute of Aeronau tics and Astronautics. He was student body president at Spruce High. He plans graduate aerospace engineering studies and more un dergraduate work for a business degree. “The Aggies Are Back” Is Coining Students at Texas A&M will be the first to be given an oppor tunity to buy the 1967 football book entitled “The, Aggies Are Back.” Each of the Aggie games in the regular season, including the Cot ton Bowl classic, is given space in the book, helping tell of the rise of the Aggies to the top of the Southwest Conference. Pho tographs and stories, along with statistics, are given for all of the games. The team and the coaches are given special emphasis says Win ston Green, president of Alpha Delta Sigma, which has been in charge of putting the book to gether. Individual honors for team members are covered in the book, including all - Southwest Confer ence players and all-American Bill Hobbs. A special section of the book is devoted to the Twelfth Man. Yell practice, Corps trips, The Texas Aggie Band, Bonfire and many other aspects of football at A&M are also covered in “The Aggies Are Back.” “The last time anything like this was attempted was in 1957. We think this will be much im- pi-oved over the last football book to come from A&M,” Green said. Copies of the book will be available Monday and cost will be $1. The Exchange Store will be selling copies along with the Journalism Department in the basement of Nagel Hall, accord ing to Green. JETT AND JET The odd-shaped jet airplane exhibited by M. B. (Dud) Jett of Seag-oville, senior aeropace engineering major at Texas A&M, may have potential in the air freight business. The tandem-wing arrangement promises flight stability with a movable center of gravity. Jett designed the wind tunnel model and analyzed the plane’s performance. Everyday Low Prices 8 A.M - 8 P.M.
