AP Pickers Select Rice And TCU NEW YORK (AP) — The mule is a stubborn animal and the goat gorges himself on tin cans. For that reason we are compelled to pick the Army mule over Navy’s goat in Saturday’s blue ribbon inter-service football game. In compiling an 8-1 record com pared with the Midshipmen’s spot ty 4-4-1, the Cadets have shown an alert, swarming, ball-hawking defense. Navy’s John Cartwright has an edge in the air over Ar my’s Steve Lindell but the game will be won or lost-like all mili tary battles- up there with the infantry. Our last gasp before the bowl games. Last week a moderate 28-14, .667. Season: 458-166, .735. The picks: Army 21, Navy 15: Jim Be- vans and Bud, “The General” Neswiacheny should be able to hold Cartwright and his mates to two touchdowns. Meanwhile, look for Lindell, with his wobbly passes, and Charlie Jarvis, with his slashing runs to get at least three for the Black Knights. Tennessee 28, Vanderbilt 7: It’s too late for the Vols to win the No. 1 ranking but they’ll Chess Tournament Planned For MSC Twenty students and faculty members are expected to compete in the Texas A&M Memorial Stu dent Center Chess Tournament Saturday. Seeking to repeat as tourna ment champion is last year’s win ner, Tredrick (cq) Crowdus, a graduate chemical engineering student from Dallas. Norman Gabitzsch, MSC Chess Committee chairman, said the Swiss open tournament begins at 8 a.m. Saturday in rooms 3-B and 3-C of the MSC. Each competitor will play five matches with a one hour time limit for each match. Persons interested in entering the free tournament should con tact Gabitzsch in room 1-4, Wal ton Hall. swc Roundup (Continued From Page 5) game offense and seventh in per- game defense. The Aggies’ per-game offense (270 yards) is the lowest for a conference champion since 1960 when Arkansas posted 263.8. No champion has posted such a meager rushing gain per game (106.3) in modern history and no one can recall when a SWC champion yielded 340 yards per game en route to a title. Individually, it was a far dif ferent story, of course. The Aggies furnished the leader in touchdown passes (Edd Hargett with 14), the leading punter (Steve O’Neal at 42.0) and the foremost interceptor of passes (Bill Hobbs with 7). Those indi vidual championships do not appear to be in jeopardy with only two more games remaining. TCU can clinch a third place finish Saturday with a victory over SMU. The Ponies have not had much luck with the Chris tians in past years. Last year’s championship squad beat the Frogs for the first time since 1958 and the Froggies are picked to go back to the old ways. When the Baylor Bears and Rice tangle this weekend the Bears will be trying desperately to make sure they'll have com pany in the league cellar after the SWC's final games are over Saturday. The Owls are currently 1-5 for conference play and the Bears hold down the bottom spot with a 0-5-1 mark. And as far as Baylor coach John Bridgers is concerned the game is extremely important. If the Bruins lose the last one they will be 1-8-1 for the season and Coach Bridgers could be expected to begin skimming the want ads sections of all the papers except the Waco one.
