Ford Dealer Sports Aplenty The Aggies Are Back By GARY SHERER The Aggies are back and they just might stay awhile! This is the feeling in Aggieland after the spine-tingl ing 10-7 A&M victory over those Bevo-lovers from Austin. Texas Coach Darrell Royal saw his third straight 6-4 year come to a close Thanksgiving Day and for Royal, 6-4 can be considered just mediocre. The Horns finished their season as they had started it, with two straight losses. * * * * We don’t usually comment on other columns but Tues day’s Daily Texan included one of note by their sports editor. While the column generally praised the Aggies for their fine comeback of 1967 there was one point that left us a little cold. It has been said to always “let sleeping dogs lie” but since this subject was raised we feel compelled to comment. The subject to which we refer is the dismissal of Mo Moor man. We won’t mention what the column said about Moor man but what we will do is remind the writer of a few things. While Moorman was wrong, he took the action of Coach Gene Stallings like a man. He admitted his guilt and did not make any alibis. It sure would be nice if the ability to forgive and for get came as easy as the ability to criticize. * * * * With Bowl games around the corner, the selection of All-America and all-conference teams is not to far off. This corner would like to beat the crowd and get its All- SWC picks in early. Hamilton, Arkansas We don’t claim to be great estimators of football talent but this group of players performed well when this writer was observing their efforts * * * * An interesting occurrance was brought to our attention by Miss Marilda Scarmardo, a secretary in the Veterinary Medicine Department. It seems she was in Chicago visiting relatives for the holidays and wanted to hear the game. Her relatives had access to a WATTS telephone line (Wide Area Telephone Service) and this spawned an idea. Marilda was joined by 12, Aug. 1967 Aggie Vet graduates, who are in the Army and stationed at the Chicago Vet School, to make a call. They made a call to a friend in Austin. He put his receiver next to the radio and turned up the volume. Thus, some two dozen Aggie fans enjoyed the whole game while being over 1,000 miles away. Guess who the friend in Austin was rooting for? * * * * As a parting note; our predictions of last week came out .500 with a 5-5 reading. This makes the season mark 57-33-2. Ugh! There are only ????? major games to be played this weekend. We will try on four of them. ALABAMA 23, AUBURN 15 Bear’s boys getting ready. MISSISSIPPI STATE 21, MISSISSIPPI 20 This is strictly a guess. ARMY 10, NAVY 7 West Point Coach Tom Cahill makes it 2-0 over Mid dies. OKLAHOMA 24, OKLAHOMA STATE 9 Sooners marching on to Miami. THE BATTALION Thursday, November 30, 1967 College Station, Texas Page 5 SWC Roundup By JERRY GRISHAM It appears that despite the Turkey Day doings, the Uni versity of Texas has out-snook ered the Aggies when it comes to post-season bowl games. While the Aggies are manag ing to send only one team to a bowl, the Cotton Bowl, the Uni- verstiy of Texas is sending two teams ‘bowling.’ The University of Texas at Arlington (the north campus) is going to play in the Pecan Bowl in Abilene, Kansas, and the west campus, the University of Texas at El Paso, is going to play in the Sun Bowl in El Paso. The only University of Texas campus falling short of a bowl game is the southern campus, the one in Austin. The failure of the Austin branch to compare in foot ball with the other campuses could result in its expulsion from the University of Texas System. But meanwhile back in the Southwest Conference. It’s just about all over, except for the shouting and a little bit of shuffling about of teams down in the ranks. To the champion Texas Aggies went lots of the statistical spoils, but in the incongruous race of 1967 most of them were of the individual variety. As a team, A&M finished first only in war. They lost virtually all of the team stats battles, ranking last in per- (See Roundup, Page 6) DEADLINE - DEC. I Last Chance! ALL FRESHMEN CLASS PICTURES FOR YEARBOOK UNIVERSITY STUDIO ATTENTION ! !
