Man stands a good chance of breeding himself toward world wide famine unless more empha sis is placed on food production, a Midwest Feed Manufacturers Association official said here Tuesday. He said producing food is and will continue to be first in impor tance, and nutrition will continue to be the feed industry’s contri bution in one form or another. The outlooks came from Lloyd Larson, MFMA executive vice president and leadoff speaker at the Feed Control-Feed Industry Seminar Feb. 7-8 in the Ramada Inn. Larson said the most vital race in the world today is between the (human) breeders and the feed ers. “Can man produce as fast as he can reproduce?” the speaker asked. “Today, the breeders are winning and widening their lead.” Quoting John Strohm, national ly known agricultural writer and editor, Larson said “the most ur gent problem in the world today is the fear of slow starvation . .. Civilization is running a race with famine, and the outcome is in doubt...” About 200 persons associated with the feed industry attended the first day’s session. Larson said the seminar was the first of its kind in the nation. Sponsors are the Texas Feed and Fertilizer Control Service at Texas A&M University, and the Midwest Feed Manufacturers As sociation. Another speaker, Bruce Pound- stone of Lexington, Ky., secre tary of the Association of Ameri can Feed Control Officials, told seminar members that communi cation can be the deciding factor between success and failure. In his talk, “The Importance of Communication,” he said the Harvard Business Review maga zine puts the ability to communi cate at the top of its list in select ing “promotable” executives. Poundstone urged the group to take the time to write clear busi ness letters and not to be afraid of repeating information on a program to be sold. He cited a survey which indicated that 60 percent of ideas accepted came after the fifth contact. The objective is to be under stood, which means brief, lucid writing and speaking, Poundstone said. Reed McDonald, director of the Texas Feed and Fertilizer Con trol Service, presented a slide picture program describing the organization and functions.
