Shakeup Planned For Wind Tunnel WIND TUNNEL INNOVATIONS Dr. Richard Thomas, left, and Robert Clark simulation tests in the Aerospace Engineer- check wind tunnel arrangements for gust ing Department’s 2-by-3 foot facility. Texas A&M scientists are planning to make the air stream act up in Easterwood Field’s 7 by 10 foot wind tunnel. Under a $32,000 NASA grant through the Langley Research Center of Virginia, the Gas Dy namics Lab of the Space Tech nology Division is developing a technique for simulating atmos pheric gusts and turbulence in a wind tunnel. “A gust generating system is being sought to study the effect of ground winds on launch ve hicles,” said Dr. Richard Thomas, director. “Even though gust tests are done at low speeds, the research ties in with space operations. “The greatest stress on a launch vehicle comes from wind blowing against its side while it’s on the pad. This is especially true if winds are gusty,” Thomas engineered to withstand flight stresses. Lab operation, with Robert Clark technician in charge, em ploys an air nozzle principle in the tunnel test section. High pressure air is pulsed through the nozzles to induce simulated gusts. Initial work is done in the 2-by-3 foot tunnel in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. “This is the first time the air injection method has been used,” Thomas noted. Results are en couraging. “We have been able to produce 18 foot per second gusts at fre quencies of over 50 cycles per second in a 70 foot per second air stream,” he said. “With this capability, we can come closer to scaling atmos pheric processes than methods using vanes or Venetian blind- 11 Air Force Officers Receive Nuclear Meet Meritorious Service Awards Scheduled Eleven Air Force officers were decorated here Thursday for meritorious service in previous assignments. An estimated 150 international scientists and engineers will dis cuss use of nuclear reactors for everything from rocket propul sion to coupled nuclear reactors for “breeding” plutonium-239 to create energy. Dr. R. G. Cochran, Department of Nuclear Engineering head, Dr. W. H. Kohler and Dr. C. G. Che- zem organized the presentation. It was approved by the American Nuclear Society this summer in Denver.
