It is the student body’s way of paying last respects to one of its own, and as such it logically should resemble a funeral service in matters of dress and behavior. Unfortunately, many students at Tuesday’s ceremony chose to wear clothes better suited to a Midnight Yell Practice. One appeared clad only in Bermuda shorts with neither shirt nor shoes. Some smoked cigarettes, and others carried on conversations, in violation of the tradi tional atmosphere of reverent silence. For newcomers who have not been briefed as to the At The Movies ‘Curtain’ Lacks Plot By JOHN HOTARD Battalion Amusements Editor In Hollywood there are three ingredients in making a good movie. Get Alfred Hitchcock to direct it. Have Paul Newman in the lead “The Birds,” and Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint made it through “North by Northwest.” Janet Leigh unfortunately never made it past the bathtub scene in “Psycho.” But in all these movies the question was not in whether they made it through the movie but rather how they made it through the movie. This is where the suspense comes in and this is where Hitchcock should have come in. Broadway, St. Louis, Missouri 63125 An equal opportunity employer procedures of Silver Taps, such actions reflect poor judg ment. For others, they reflect simple, unexcusable thoughtlessness. There is nothing any of us can do now for Eddie Fullen or Willis Compton. Silver Taps was held so that we could demonstrate, to their friends and relatives, that their pass ing was not ignored by fellow Aggies. That is all we can do; but it is the least that is expected of us. Silver Taps is a funeral service; it should be treated as such. CADET SLOUCH by Jim Earle male role. Have Julie Andrews in the lead female role. Well, Hollywood did just that with “Torn Curtain,” but they left out an ingredient somewhere on the mixing table. The result is, at best, just another “good” movie. The story fails to put the au dience on the edge of their seats, as do most Hitchcock thrillers. ! The script wasn’t well enough written to bring out outstanding performances which Andrews and Newman are capable of doing. The plot is about another one of the East-West games spon sored by the State Department rather than the Shriners. Paul ! Newman, an atomic physicist, de- \ fects to the East Germans, and | the audience at first isn’t told if i he’s going to be a good or a bad guy. (Show me a movie where 'i Paul Newman was ever a bad guy.) But he holds his own by j just being himself. | Julie Andrews, on the other h^nd, throws away her unbrella and guitar and becomes New- ! man’s fiancee. The opening scene ] of the movie has both of them in bed .... together, which com pletely destroys your faith in Mary Poppins. But she proves she can handle any role which comes her way. As said before, the trouble is not in the acting. It’s the plot. You know that they’re both going to make it through the movie. Even with Hitchcock, this is al most a sure thing.
