On the first day allowed for signing members of the 1965 high school football crop, the Aggies unofficially bagged 16 future 3 Lettermen, Matson Lead Tracksters Three Southwest Conference champions are among 11 letter- men who’ll lead the Texas Aggies in the 1966 track and field season. The peerless Randy Matson, world record holder in the shot put and NCAA record holder in the discus, heads the list of re turning champions. But, since he is participating in basketball the Aggies will have to wait a while before he joins the track squad. Dan Meadows of Corpus Christi and Mike Schrider of North Branch Depot, N. J., are the other returning SWC champions. Meadows last spring won the javelin event with a throw of 206 feet, I1/2 inches and Schrider leaped 6 feet, 614 inches to win the high jump. But, Coach Charles Thomas and his graduate assistant coach Ted Nelson must quickly rebuild a corps of sprinters before the Aggies can be seriously consid ered for league honors this year. Nelson and Robert Martin were graduated and James White be came scholastically ineligible and that virtually wiped out A&M’s hopes in the dashes. Tri-captain Gilbert Smith re turns, however, and has some potential help coming from such runners as Arie Britt, Billy Schmidt, Buster Mason, Scott Blessing and Drew Hemphill. A&M’s varsity and freshmen both finished second in their re spective divisions in last year’s SWC meet. The upcoming sopho mores must come through strong ly this spring if the Aggies are to be successful. The 11 returning lettermen are Arie Britt, sprints and relays; Bob Brown, broad jump; Don Kooser, hurdles; Randy Matson, discus and shot; Larry McGough, 440 and relays; Dan Meadows, javelin; Jim Sebastian, 880; Mike Schrider, high jump; Gilbert Smith, sprints and relays; Don Smith, mile, and Cecil Wood, high jump. prospects. A&M quantity was exceeded by no other conference school. Coach Gene Stallings and his pen-laden gang also countered in the quality column, with four all staters and a bevy of all-district performers. Ravaging the Gulf Coast area, the Ags collared three all-state prizes, Houston Saint Thoihas halfback Larry Stegent, Baytown tackle Charles Hendricks, and Edna halfback Danny McBride. In addition, all-district selec tions Wayne King, Houston Rea gan end, Cypress-Fairbanks half back Bryan Christian and Sam Houston tackle Billy Husband joined the Aggie corral. Hous ton area pennings also included tackles Dick Adams of South Houston and Mike Smith of Wal- trip. Looking statewide, A&M swept Corsicana clean by signing both guard Lynn Odum and tackle Don Robertson. All-state tackle Jack Woodward from Crockett, Palacios linebacker Billy Kubec- ka, Mark Moseley, Livingston halfback, Winston Boehm, Odes sa tackle, Eden quarterback Rob ert Stanbury and Shreveport Jesuit quarterback Gary Kaposta are known to sport the Aggie brand. Running true to form, the Uni versity of Texas snatched the bluest of the chips from under Aggie snouts. Texas signed all staters Bobby Wuensch of Hous ton Jones and Teddy Koy of Bell- ville. Wuensch is generally regarded as the most outstanding line prospect in the state. He is tout ed as an all-everything lineback er in the style of All-American Tommy Nobis. Koy is the brother of former Texas grid star Ernie Koy, who now earns his keep with the New York Giants. But the younger Koy can stand on his own creden tials, having scored 19 touch downs last season and chugging 9.8 yards per carry. He also punted at a booming 40.7 clip. TCU captured North Texas’ finest g r i d d er, halfback Bub Deerinwater. The 200-pound In dian star scored 50 touchdowns in three seasons at Wichita Falls Rider, giving Frog fans hopes of retaining their Southwest Con ference freshman championship next year. Texas Tech snatched 15 play ers from the field, including Saint Thomas end Larry Zientek and Randy Bowlin, Lubbock Monterey quarterback. Baylor had only to scan the Waco area to cop University High halfback Mike Robbins, two-time state hurdles champion, and Richfield stars, quarterback Starr. ed recruiting at SMU as the row Wilson fullback Steve Par- tillo and Hurst Bell all-state, Dickie Wooten and guard Kent Hometown fever also dominat- Methodists grabbed Dallas Wood- rott, Irving linebacker Bruce Por- fullback Randy Beck.
