Page 8 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Thursday, September 30, 1965 9 Month Football Goal Of Coaches By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer The Texas High School Coach es Association is going for broke in football—it wants to have the game on a year-around basis. This is indicated in a resolution to the Texas Interscholastic League district committees. It calls for an accelerated physical education class for students in terested in competitive athletics. It does not specify any partic ular period and since such a class can now be conducted during the football season anyway, obvious ly the coaches want to cover the entire school year. The effort to get football back into the school systems as it was until 1940 followed an official in terpretation by the League of Rule 30 of the football plan. The League said special class es for training and conditioning football players at any time other than the regular football season would violate Rule 30. The coaches’ resolution will go to the legislative council of the League for possible action in No vember. Should it be submitted to a ref erendum and voted in by the schools, there would be classes for competitive athletics during the regular school day. The coaches said there would be no football equipment used but that the class would be for “teaching of skills, techniques and physical development so nec essary to participation in compet itive athletics.” It would become part of the school curriculum. It is supposed to include all the sports but Interscholastic League officials have an idea that football would be on the schedule every day, thus it would mean year-around football training. The question is whether this would bring over-emphasis of football, something that has been at issue since the League started its football plan. There have been numerous votes on spring training and at this time only Class AAAA has it, but is penalized by having to start fall training later than the other schools. Football has been given a defi nite period of operation, all-star games have been banned and other rules passed to prevent anyone being able to charge over emphasis. The League, in making its in terpretation of Rule 30, said it was under the impression the schools adopted the rule to keep inter-school sports on a “seasonal basis.” The coaches certainly would be going out of this realm if they got a rule that permitted them to teach football the year around. Only football and basketball have set periods. There is no limit on track, baseball, golf and tennis. It is difficult to limit track because there is cross-coun try in the fall, indoor track in the winter and outdoor track in the spring. Baseball actually limits itself, because it can not be played ex cept in good weather, which doesn’t come until spring, and it must end when school is out for the year, so can’t be carried on during the summer. Football starts in late August and runs through mid-December. But the coaches want more time to develop players. Hence the proposal to have classes during the entire school year. ?ire$totte Where Customer Satisfaction is GUARANTEED OPEN 6 DAYS A WEEK — 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. WE DO ALL THIS WORK: 1 Align Front End 2 Balance Front Wheels 3 Adjust Brakes 4 Repack Front Wheel Bearings We do All 3 for only Replacement Parts if needed and torsion bar adjustment not included Use Your TEXACO CREDIT CARD De Luxe Champion NEW TREADS.
