Arfons Sets Mark, 258.62 MPH BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS, Utah — Walt Arfons, holder of the world land speed record, returned to his first love—drag racing—and set a world record of 258.62 miles an hour in the quarter-mile Wednesday. He used his jet-powered Green Monster, the car in which he set the land speed mark of 536.71 m.p.h. last year. The old drag mark was 210.80 m.p.h. set by Tom McEwen of Los Angeles in a piston-engine car. The speed is the average over the final 132 feet of the 1,320- foot distance.
