Page 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, April 2, 1964 THE BATTALION BU Victimizes Cadets By JIM BUTLER Battalion Sports Editor A&M proved Wednesday after noon that a four-run lead doesn’t mean a thing unless it’s held after three outs in the bottom of the ninth. THE BAYLOR Bears spotted the Cadets a quartet of tallies in the opening frame then went on to take an 8-7 decision in Waco. Coach Tom Chandler’s Maroon set the bombardment pace early as Jerry Ballard, Bill Grochett and Bill Hancock banged singles to open the game. The hits plus two straight errors by Bear shortstop Bill Bain and a sacrifice fly from the bat of Billy Crain accounted for four runs. BAYLOR PITCHER John Porter shackled the Aggies for the next three innings as the Bears scratched out a run in the second and a pair in the fourth to pull back into contention. 14th Bowling Meet Runs On Weekend The largest and oldest intercol legiate invitational bowling tourna ment in the country starts Friday in the Memorial Student Center bowling lanes. The 14th Annual A&M Invita tional opens action Friday after noon with 11 teams from the Southwest area entered. The entries are: Lamar Tech, Beaumont; Arlington State, Ar lington; Loyola, New Orleans, La; Baylor, Waco; Del Mar College, Corpus Christi; University of Arrington’s Hit Brings Victory In Last Inning Mike Arrington socked a two- run producing double in the last inning to bring the Aggie Fish a 5-4 comeback victory over the Bay lor Cubs in a Travis Park game Wednesday afternoon. Trailing by a 4-3 count going into the last inning, the Fish at tack started with a single by shortstop Jeff Warren. He was forced at second but Ronald Smith in his first time at bat for the year, lined a single to center to put runners on both bases. Smith was pitchhitting for pitcher Larry Rowe and his hit couldn’t have come at a better time. The hit paved the way for Arrington’s blast which scored the winning run. Rowe went all the way in route to his first triumph of the year. He gave up eight base knocks but w r as extremely effective with men on base. Several of the Cub tallies were unearned as the Fish commit ted two errors. Rowe sent 10 batters down via the strikeout route. Dan Coker lead the Fish charge with three of the six total hits. The Fish take on the Rice baseballers Saturday afternoon at Travis Park. Texas Beats Froggies, 5-1 In Clark Field AUSTIN OP)—Bob Myer pitched a five-hitter and Ron Bandy bat- ted-in three runs Wednesday to lead Texas to a 5-1 victory over Texas Christian in a Southwest Conference baseball game. The victory, Texas’ third in con ference play against a single loss, kept the Longhorns in first place. The loss dropped TCU, co champions with Texas last year, to a 1-2 conference record. Myer, Texas’ senior right-hander, struck out five and walked only one to take the win. The loser was Lance Browm, who was relieved by Larry Kveton in the eighth inning. The Longhorns got 13 hits, but three of their runs were unearned, coming in the third inning after TCU catcher Freddie Jones dropped a throw to the plate, allowing Tex as’ Joe Gideon to score. Southwestern Louisiana, Lafayette, La.; University of Texas, Austin; San Antonio College; Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, La.; Trinity College, San Antonio; and A&M. The Aggies are the defending champions. The University of Southwestern Louisiana was the 1963 National Association of In tercollegiate Athletics champion. Thirty-six trophy awards will be given to winners in the team event, singles, doubles and all-events. Trophies will also be given for high individual game and high in dividual series. Fish Swimmers In AAU Meet X :j: COLLEGE STATION <A>) — Two A&M freshman swimmers, Ricky Nesbit of Dallas and John Cleaves of Houston, will seeks berths in the Olympic trials qualifying at the National AAU meet at Bartles ville, Okla., this week. Nesbit will swim both the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke. Clea- vies will compete in the 100 free style. Nesbit set national freshman and American records for the 100- yard breaststroke this season when he was clocked in 60.6 against the University of Texas freshmen. A pair of doubles by Ballard and Grochett gave A&M a two- run margin going into the bottom of the fifth. Then hibernation ended and the Bears saw the light. PORTER OPENED the home half of the fifth with a single and trotted home on Gary Price’s long home run that knotted the score. Fred Neely followed with a single, stole second and scored on Jim Mallon’s triple. The rally sent Aggie starter Chuck McGuire to the showers and brought on Steve Hillhouse. The little lefty walked Gary Hall and surrendered a single to Donnie Lawrence. Then dependable key stone man Grochett hobbled a grounder by John McEldowpey to let in the fourth Baylor marker. BOTH TEAMS added a run in the sixth to give Baylor an 8-6 lead into the ninth. Back-to-back doubles by Hancock and Stewart gave heart murmurs to Bear fans. But reliefer Hem-y Perkins retired the next three men to preserve the win for Porter. McGuire was the loser.
