Page 4 College Station, Texas Tuesday, March 24, 1964 THE BATTALI^^N Spring Grid Game Shows Tremendous Spirit Danny Mcllhany’s White squad won the A&M Intra-Squad Foot ball Tournament in a unique spring game played on Kyle Field Saturday night. Coach Hank Foldberg devised an ingenious plan to increase spec tator interest and team spirit while showing off the tremendous progress the Aggies made in Ag Thinclads Nudged By Rice Fish Drub Shorthorns, Owlets BY MAYNARD ROGERS One point was good enough for the Rice Owl thinclads Saturday as they staged a mild upset over the Aggies in the A&M-Rice-LSU track meet here. Rice tallied 68 team points to the Aggies’ 67 while LSU scored 32. But the Fish soothed Coach Charlie Thomas’ pride by running up 75 points to swamp the Texas Shorthorns 40% and the Rice Owlets 37% in another meet here. A&M’s varsity cindermen took seven first places to the Owls’ six, but a loss in the mile relay and Ted Nelson’s defeat in the 440- yard dash was the difference. The Aggies had two double win ners in the varsity competition. Danny Roberts set records in the shot put and discus with tosses of 59-% and 174, respectively. Dis tance man Ilhan Bilgutay took both the mile and three mile runs for A&M. A sprint relay team of Robert Martin, Pat Mitchell, Richard Hall and Nelson won the event with a 41.5, while Bobby Brown took the broad jump with a 22-11% leap. John Collins won the high jump at 6-4. A strong Aggie Fish team, led by Randy Matson, Mike Schrider and Buddy Woodall, piled up points from the start and widened its margin with each event. Mat- son pushed the shot 60-10% and the discus 168-9%. Woodall won the broad jump with a 22-5% effort, placed fourth in the javelin and ran on the win ning sprint and mile relay teams. The 440-yard relay, comprised of Don Price, Buster Mason, Woodall and James White, marked a time of 42.4, while the mile four some of Arie Britt, Darrell Wilk, Woodall and Larry McGough turned a time of 3:21.3. McGough also won the 440-yard dash. Of Team spring training. Foldberg divided the players in to four teams, identified by their quarterbacks and played a separ ate ‘'‘game” each period in tourna ment fashion. Mcllhany’s White — the first team — opened the night against Eddie McKaughan’s Maroon—the third team—with the White tak ing a 7-0 win. The second period matched Jim Willenborg’s Maroon—second team —and Charles LaGrange’s White —fourth team. Willenborg’s crew took a similar 7-0 win on a pass play from Willenborg to Ricky Whatley. The third quarter had the losers paired against each other and fourth period saw the winners play for the mythical spring title. LaGrange guided his White team to a 6-0 win for third place. Mcllhany’s White romped to a 14- 0 decision for the championship. Spectators were impressed with the all-round improvement of the gridders. Blocking was sharp and that long-lost essential — speed— seems to have returned to Aggie- land. The running of fullback Budgie Ford was the highlight of the night. Ford picked up 72 yards on 11 carries. Halfback Mike Pitman was close behind with 58 yards in 13 tries. How to make party plans and a pecan pie at the same time! Southwestern States Telephone Steers Lose To Aggies Agaii A&M’s baseball team continued a trend Saturday initiated by the SWC champion basketball team— beating the University of Texas. Tbe pin-point pitching of lefty Steve Hillhouse and booming bat of Lance Cobb — both sophomores — brought the Aggies a 5-2 win over the Longhorns in Travis Park. Roaming centerfield for the first time this season, Cobb hit two. long drives over the 330-foot marker in left field to knock in three Cadet tallies. Three Steer pitchers failed to get Cobb out. Besides his home runs, he was hit by a pitch and walked, scoring four times. Meanwhile, Hillhouse hurled a seven-hitter, allowing no earned runs. Texas Coach Bibb Falk started his best pitcher Bob Myer who had never lost to the Aggies. The ace right hander lasted five innings, giving up both home runs, before being lifted. The Aggies opened the scoring in the second inning when Cobb was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on George Hargett’s double. Cobb’s first four-bagger in the fourth accounted for the second Cadet Swordsmen Place In Nationals An Aggie fencing team of Hogue Lewis, E. A.
