THE BATTALION Page 2 College Station, Texas Friday, February 14, 1964 CADET SLOUCH by Jim Earle “ . . . But, man, you don’t hafta’ play an instrument to be in our combo—all you need is hair!” BATTALION EDITORIALS Fish Drill Team Getting Short-Changed A&M University has innumerable campus clubs and organizations. Some teach you to fly an airplane; some teach you to jump out of airplanes; and you can even learn to take g-ood pictures on your way down. But there is one group that gets less and deserves more credit than the rest combined. That is the Freshman Drill Team. This group of fish admirably represent A&M Uni versity all over the nation in parades and drill team com petition. They practice many afternoon hours, weekends, and even holidays for the privilege of representing A&M in contests as far away as Arizona, Indiana and Louisiana. But unlike most other teams in competition, the fish must beg, borrow or steal a ride to the meets, pay their own expenses and even take up collections among themselves to pay for all incidental costs. This is a sad state of affairs when the Aggies, repre senting the nation’s largest military school, have to pay approximately $200 each for that honor. Other teams are provided with the best of equipment. Alumni or college funds pay for their trips on commercial air liners, and rooms, meals and even recreation is provided. It was necessary for the Fish Drill Team commander to explain to the judges in the Arizona competition that they had to make-do with the scratched belt buckles issued, so that the team wouldn’t lose points because of it. The citizens of Bryan and College Station will have an excellent opportunity to improve the team’s condition and show support for this fine organization, when A&M hosts approximately 20 high school and 15 college drill teams in competition here April 11. The meager aid from the Uni versity is insufficient, and no higher tribute could be paid to this group than to at least put them on an equal basis. —R.L.F. Religious Emphasis Week, though, is not just another tradition. Over the years this one particular week has come to hold a special place of importance in the hearts of all Aggies. That is, all Aggies who have been privileged to at tend a Religious Emphasis Week as I remember my last one two years ago. Outstand ing speakers, such as Dr. Gaston Foote of Ft. Worth, and even ing discussion sessions in the dorm left me with lasting im pressions. Not being in a position to head a campaign for the revival of Religious Emphasis Week, I would ]ike to cast my vote in that direction and urge others to do the same. I can’t help, but wonder if the Douglas Aircraft Company, Inc. and Missile and Space Sys tems — Aerospace engineering, civil engirteering, electrical engi neering, physics, mechanical en gineering chemical engineering, nuclear engineering and mathe matics. Union Carbide Chemicals Com pany — Chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mechani cal engineering and chemistry. administration’s decision to let the churches handle the matter is in someway connected to the Supreme Court decision against prayers in public schools. My feeling here is that Religious Emphasis Week is a voluntary, not compulsory, campus activity. If we are to believe what we have been told, that we are res ponsible, “almost” adult persons, then our University should not begrudge us an opportunity to exercise our minds in a program that has never failed to enlight en or answer the questions of some students. Having the services on the campus make it much easier for the majority of students to at tend. In conclusion, I feel I am voic ing the sentiments of a majority of Aggies when I say that the death of Religious Emphasis Week will be the loss of one of the finest traditions in Aggie- land’s history. Jerry C. Cooper, ’63 ★ ★ ★ Editor, The Battalion: With your permision I will ad dress myself to Mr. Bland since I feel that his allegations deserve an answer. I am a conservative Mr. Bland and I really must take exception to some of your statements. To begin with if you wish to so devastatingly cut down the con servative movement I would sug gest that next time you consult an instructor of debate so that you will not leave your argument so open to rebuttal. Your first mistake was in being all in clusive in your indictment of con servatives. I am a conservative and, really Mr. Bland, I am not that terrible. My mother loves me and Barry Goldwater is not my God, though I don’t believe he is a clown. I may disagree with you but I honestly don’t hate anyone but I will admit that I get fed up every once in a while. I am bigoted to a point and I admit it. By the way, how strong is the glass in your house ? As for my ignorance, I believe that my education, coming from the same source, is as good as yours. I am not now and never have been a member of the John Birch Society I obviously can’t be a member of the D.A.R., and a hood just diesn’t do a thing for me. My friends tell me that I walk for ward just like everyone else and that my eyes are not the least bit wild. In addition to these things I prefer Danish Modern to French Provencial. Finally Mr. Bland, if you wish to discredit someone by accus ing them of intolerance don’t commit that same sin in your own argument. You seem to have followed Mark Twain’s ad vice, “Don’t worry about the conservatives, if you can’t ans wer their arguments you can al ways call them names.” May I suggest that you review your position.
