1';S THE BATTALION Pag-e 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, February 13, 1964 Golden Gloves Set To Decide Titles BATTALION SPORTS FORT WORTH 6P>—Four for mer champions will be among the state’s best amateur boxers who will start battling for Texas Gold en Gloves championships Thursday night. The state tournament sponsored for the 28th consecutive year by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram for charity, is a four-night affair. Boxing Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights will clear the decks for the crowning of cham pions Monday night. The eight titlists will represent Texas in the National Golden Gloves Tourna ment at Louisville, Ky., starting Feb. 24. Returning to defend titles will be featherweight Floyd Molina and light heavyweight Wayne Morris, both of Fort Worth. Sammy Al varez of Odessa, flyweight cham pion last year, will compete as featherweight and Manny Perez of Amarillo, welter king, is back for another shot at the crown. Lenox Shrinks Rhine’s Lead; Younger Brother Heads Fish Bennie Lenox kept up his deadly assault on the SWC scoring lead Tuesday night pumping in 30 points, just three shy of Rice pace setter Kendall Rhine who heads the circuit with 160 total points. After seven conference games, Lenox has dumped in 157 points averaging 22.4 points a game. John Beasley follows the versatile Len ox with 93 points and a 13.3 mark. His high conference game came against the Rice Owls when he dropped in 22 points. Lenox scored his most points in the Tech game. BILL ROBINETTE and Paul Timmins follow in a close race for third and fourth places respective ly. Robinette has 68 points and a 9.7 average while his teammate Timmins has 64 points and a 9.1 average. In the rebounding department, John Beasley has a wide lead with 64 to his credit. The closest con tender is Timmerman with 48. Robinette follows in a close third with 45 off the boards. UNTIL THE TECH splurge in points, the most scored against the Aggies in conference warfare was 70 by the Rice squad. The Aggies have racked up 543 points for a 77.6 mark while the opposition has tallied with 461 and a 65.9 aver age. Heading the Fish charges after eight season tilts is the younger Lenox (Curley) who has chalked up 143 points, 75 of those in con ference action. In league play, Lenox has averaged 18.8 points and his high game was against the Rice Owls where he scored 25. J. C. SMITH follows in second place in total scoring with 112 points with 62 in conference play. Reggie Gilbreath has 57 to his credit against SWC foes. Lenox also leads in the rebound ing category with 37 while Smith follows with 31 to his credit. The Fish have scored 294 points in league action while the opponents have tallied 349 points. Five are high school seniors and one is a junior college graduate. In an effort to strengthen the middle line, the Maroon secured the name of Rex Wilson, 6-3, 210, from Mt. Pleasant. Wilson was an All-American tackle at Texarkana Junior College. All-stater Howard Van Loon is the second tackle to be signed by the Aggies. Van Loon, 6-2, 235, from Rotan, also won the Class A shot put title as a sophomore and was second as a junior. A third lineman Is guard Jerry Brausel, 6-1, 205.
