Dr. Jack O. Knowles of Miami, speaking at the College of Veter inary Medicine Honors Convoca tion, described the ready availabil ity of the funds as a method of “baiting the trap” for eventual, complete dependence on the federal government. The University of Miami, for example, is now getting about 90 per cent of its research money from Washington, D.C., the veter inarian pointed out. He said many fine people are behind congressional bills to pro vide research money “because they just don’t know the whole truth.” Two representatives of the American Institute of Biological Sciences will be here Thursday and Friday to consider A&M University for the convention of 32 affiliated societies in August, 1967. They are Dr. John Olive, exec utive director, and Mrs. Ann Kulkack, convention manager of the AIBS. In 1959, about 100,000 United States farms sold products worth more than $40,000 per farm. Radio Committe e’s W5A C Is ‘Oldtimer’ In Industry Ham station W5AC in the Me morial Student Center is one of the oldtimers in the radio business. It produced the world’s first football game, and it was in oper ation long before the Federal Com munications Commission began handing out name tags with W and K prefixes. The student-operated station was the forerunner of WTAW, one of two commercial radio sta- GRAND OPENING Welcome Aggies! Students still control the station today (with some assistance from the FCC, of course), and their au dience includes operators through out the world. The 30-member MSC Radio Committee gets a tough workout prior to football weekends, holi days and special events at A&M, chairman Terry R. Griffin report ed. Before one national holiday, the Aggies sent more than 200 messages. Some of the 250,000-plus opera tors that jam the airways are sometimes a nuisance but often the angels of mercy. The Aggies are no exception. They once notified local resi dents about the death of their son in Venezuela, for instance. The students received the word from a Mississippi operator who learned about the tragedy from another. The parents were unable to reach the dead man’s wife in the isolated Venezuela village. So the Aggies went to work again. Fi nally, they reached an operator in the South American country who agreed to contact the rest of the family. Through the short wave units, the two families were able to get together again. Griffin said on another occasion a Garland youngster needed blood donors, and the Aggies solved the problem. They also found anti rabies vaccine for a family in Nicaragua one time, and they worked around the clock with Hur ricane Carla. Jerrell Jones, an electrical engi. neering professor, has been the ad visor for three years. His prede cessors date back before the 1918 Thanksgiving Day football broad- cast of the Aggie-Texas Univer sity football game. The station then was known as 5YA. The broadcast, incidentally, was done in code by a group of engi- neering students who had to make part of their equipment and bor row the rest in order to accomplish the feat. Peace Corps Advisory Group To Push Organization Here Developing plans to better tell the Peace Corps’ story on cam pus is the prime responsibility of a newly-organized Peace Corps Advisory Council.
